I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Lee Shelton (a great surgeon and emergency room physician) who was trained by Dr. Yancey before he passed. Dr. Shelton recalled that he did not see any complications when he rotated with Dr. Yancey. This speaks to the excellence of Dr. Yancey's surgical technique and his acumen. A surgical giant who is truly missed.
His legacy lives on.

When I started at Grady in 1985, I was sent to work at Hughes Spalding Medical Center. This is where I met and worked with Dr. Yancey. It was such a pleasure to work with him. Then I transferred to one of the neighborhood clinics, which was renamed in honor of Dr Yancey, it was renamed Asa Yancey MD Health Center. I stayed until my retirement, so you can say I started and ended my career with Dr. Asa G. YANCEY MD. REST IN PEACE.

To the Yancey family,
Dr. Asa Yancey will be forever remembered as a pioneer in Medicine. We, as a Community, will forever be indebted to you for sharing him. He set the mantle high in excellence and consideration to all. I remember speaking with him when I returned from training to Atlanta. He was always interested in how and what I was doing, especially the new surgeries I had learned. And he seemed very pleased that I was here to stay and practice in Atlanta. I will miss his presence, his gentle demeanor and strength in fostering a more civil and humane Medical Society in the Atlanta metropolitan area. I thought he was magnificent!

I was Atlanta born and raised as a working white kid and lucky enough to go to Dartmouth and the Medical College of Georgia
During my trainng at Grady I met Dr Yancey who was so gracious to me that we struck up a friendship and years later when I became President of the Medical Association of Atlanta he helped me strengthen ties with the Atlanta Medical Association and we offered dues free membership to their members. Asa helped greatly in those days to be glue in the medical community and I will always be grateful for his guidance and counsel.

It was a pleasure to have known Dr. Yancey through the years. Our father received his general surgery training under Dr. Yancey at Grady. I will always remember him as a kind and humble man. His brilliance would come out when he spoke on medicine. He gave us all a history lesson when he came to speak at our father's funeral. How he was one of eight African-American surgeons that Dr. Drew trained and dispersed all over the country to train other African-American surgeons. He and Mrs. Yancey were great supporters in the community and supported African-American businesses. He received an honorary Doctoral degree from Morehouse the same day I graduated. Our deepest sympathy to the Yancey family.

I've been considering what I might say or do to honor a man that was such an important influence in my family's life.
Dr. Yancey was a mentor to my father, the late Dr. Herbert F. Ryan. Dad always spoke of Cheif, as he called him, with such respect and awe. He molded my father into the surgeon he became. He was forever grateful for the knowledge and wisdom Dr. Yancey shared.
When I went away to college and had a health scare that required surgery, my dad called me home and had his trusted mentor and friend, Dr. Yancey, perform the surgery on me. He put me totally at ease.
When my father had a stroke and could no longer maintain his medical practice, Dr. Yancey gave my siblings and myself valuable advice on what steps to take to dissolve the practice with dignity.
Dr. Yancey and his wife were always kind, humble, and set an example for everyone around them.
My family and I will be forever grateful for having known such a brilliant, caring person in Dr. Yancey. Thank you, Yancey family, for sharing him with us and the world!

I remember living in Eagan Homes in Atlanta when my mother would take me to the doctor. Dr. Yancey was the only doctor I remember by name. As a matter of fact, I believe he was the only black doctor serving in the community. God Bless the family for truly he was a remarkable man with legacies to follow.

In My Pocket
I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.
My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.
They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.
Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.
But of all the treasures I have, it's the memories of you that are the most precious.

I am so saddened by the death of Dr. Yancey. He was always SO supportive of me when I was in internship/residency at Grady Hospital. He was like a father to me in many ways and that was much appreciated being that I never knew mine; and also I was new to the Atlanta area. Sometimes he'd give me (and my then-boyfriend) tickets to some medical event to represent him! It was such an honor. He'd even touch base with me periodically after I began my practice, again, with encouragement, support and wise words. Plus some humor.
Asa was a class act; so kind, highly intelligent (and handsome, of course).
Dr. Yancey was a pioneer in many ways and left a strong legacy not only for his own success, but with the educational focus he instilled in his children.
I send my prayers to the Yancey family; and may Asa take his well-deserved rest. Cherish the memories.
