Cameron Alexander Obituary

Cameron Madison Alexander, a pastor who spent more than four decades in the pulpit of Atlanta's Antioch Baptist Church North, has died.

He was 86.

Viewings will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019 at Murray Brothers Funeral Home, 1199 Utoy Springs Rd. S.W.; and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019 at Antioch Baptist Church North, 540 Cameron Madison Alexander Blvd.

A memorial service will also be held at the historic Atlanta church at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2019 at Antioch Baptist Church North.

According to the historic church's website, Alexander became pastor in 1969. While on vacation in Atlanta, his father - at the request of a member of Antioch - asked the younger Alexander to fill in one Sunday while the church prepared to vote on a new pastor.

After preaching "A Man Is in Town," the church offered him the position on a write-in vote.

At the time, Antioch had only 600 members, today it has about 14,000.

Alexander was also a prominent community leader. He helped lead a bus boycott that integrated the Bibb County transit system during his pastorate in Macon. And, while a pastor in Savannah, he formed a partnership with C&S Bank President Mills B. Lane to improve 109 blocks of real estate in Savannah.

Alexander was born in Atlanta, "a Grady baby." He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and went to earn degrees from Florida A&M University and Morehouse College.

With heartfelt condolences to Reverend Kenneth Alexander, Jr. (My classmate and friend) and the entire Alexander family, extended family and friends. Reverend Alexander was truly a beacon of light! I interviewed him in the early 2000s regarding the church's, multi platform outreach program. He was amazing! To make a long story short, when my grandson was born in 2007, we proudly named him Cameron Alexander Love. That is how profound our meeting was! A giant oak has truly fallen! Thank you Reverend Alexander! We thank God for you!

My deepest condolences go out to the family of the beloved Rev. Cameron Madison Alexander, a man TRULY called by The Creator to do a good work in the earth. It's more than I can comprehend how Rev. Alexander cared about his flock and cared about me. With an 8,000 member congregation over 25 years ago, he was there for me when I needed divine intercessory prayer. Even now, my mind and heart reflect on his words that were so genuine. So fatherly. Rev. Alexander helped me make a decision that changed the course of my life. And for this I am eternally grateful.

There is no doubt that Rev. Alexander was welcomed into Heaven with angels singing Amazing Grace. He will Rest in Peace with Christ and the Most High. Selah!

I met Pastor Alexander once. He was very congenial. However, he and my father, Rev. H. C. Boyd of Albany by way of Ludowici, GA, were the best of friends for years and years. He and my husband, Apostle J. T. McCrary, worked alongside each other with men who had served time giving them another chance - like God gives us time and time again. He will be greatly missed. Love to the Antioch family and his personal family.

Antioch Baptist Church was my first church of choice when a student at Morehouse College in the late 80's and early 90's. I brought my girlfriend to accompany me at Antioch and she joined the church, her first visit. We soon went through pre marriage counseling with the Alexanders and were married in July '93 by Rev Alexander. He and his wife both are so sincere and caring. We appreciated all of the insightful words of growth.
When I think of influential Black men in Atlanta and in history, I think of Rev Cameron Alexander.
I will continue to pray for the Alexander family and the members of Antioch.

My days at Antioch were some of my most formative in my life, and my memories of Dr. Alexander, stretching from his early days of doing revivals in Philadelphia to the establishment of the "Haven on Kennedy St." The HOW House, "Music, Art, Drama & Dance (MADD) for Christ", the Acapella group "Message", "Birthday Sumpin' " the D. T. George Gospel Choir, "Wednesday Nite Chuch," Meals on Wheels, even gospel raps for Tithing Tips. All of it for the Glory of God thru His Bankhead Ambassador, Cameron Madison Alexander. We didn't always see eye-to-eye, but he always made sure that in the end, I learned and appreciated the lessons that would make me a better Christian and a better man. He showed me, the first Sunday I ever saw snow in Atlanta, how to keep your priorities straight. That day the 6 of us that DID show up to church worshipped as if the congregation was packed, and he preached that way too! And when he looked at you with those eyes of his, it was as if he could laser into your soul, so he kept me on the straight and narrow often without saying a word! He is, and always will be, the most influential pastor in my life outside of my father. In a nutshell, " I ain't talkin' about nobody...I'm just talkin' about what I'm talkin' about!"

Rejoice in knowing Pastor Alexander touched many people in the body of Christ. I was introduced to him in the early 80's by my childhood friend and her family, faithful members for over 40+ years.
His delivery of the word, was my first introduction to a real God. I'm grateful for the faithfulness of his church family and his desire to share the good news of God with everyone. He also married two of my childhood friends in spirit filled wedding ceremonies, filled with truth and wisdom. The seeds Pastor Alexander sowed will continue to bless Gods people for many years to come.

We have such wonderful memories of the services and his sermons especially Selah, My, my, my what about that?. We remember his love of music and the wonderful Choir Demonstration day when he invited the director of the Florida Mass Choir to lead us. Nate and I still sing those songs. As a student at Morehouse School of Religion, I was told I needed to meet Dr. Alexander. After arriving with some of my classmates, I asked, Is Dr. Alexander in? The Sir said, No, I then asked when is he coming. He replied, Dr. Alexander has been here long enough to come to hbd office when he gets ready. I came back and finally met the legendary Pastor. He welcomed me with open arms after finding out I was from Alabama. He also invited me to play the piano for a weekly service and introduced me to some of his ministers.

I remember when I first moved to GA., Antioch was the first and only church I visited. I knew that was going to be me and my daughter's church home. Rev. Alexander asked me a question and i remember answering..."Ah-ha," and he said...welcome to Antioch! You have delivered God's word to your parishioners well and has done as the Lord command. Now you can rest from all your labor. You used to say to the congregation, "keep sitting there, here!" You can now sit and rest in heaven. When you meet your creator face to face, you will hear those three golden words..."servant well done!" Rest on and enjoy the wonderful journey that you so well deserve. Thank you for all the messages and i thank God for the messenger.

To the Alexander family. My prayer is that God will comfort you doing this time. I will miss "my Pastor". He allways greeted me lovingly as "Miss FBI." I will remember his teaching. Just like David, he was trully a man after God's heart. Love and prayer.

There will never be another Rev. Dr. C. M. Alexander. As a sophomore in college (roughly 18 years ago), I had a chance meeting with Rev. Alexander. During a break from college, I just happened to be at my home church visiting the staff when Rev. Alexander stopped by. Unbeknownst to us both, God sent him just to minister to me. I was at a crossroad in my academic life and I needed guidance as to which road to take. Rev. Alexander ministered to me and gave me the encouragement I needed to walk in faith. Years later, I was able to let him know about the indelible mark he made on my christian walk. He was an unlikely comedic who was immensely wise, amazingly infectious, and highly anointed. Who would have known that Rev. Alexander would alter his trip that day to minister to a lost sheep? My, my, my, what about that!
