Donald McGinty Obituary

McGINTY, Dr. Donald Bryan

December 31, 1938 - October 17, 2025

Dr. Donald Bryan McGinty, a devoted naval officer, accomplished endodontist, and passionate runner, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on October 17, 2025. Born in Opelika, Alabama, on December 31, 1938, Don began life with a strong work ethic, helping his father bottle RC Cola in the family garage. Don attended the University of Alabama, where he earned his Bachelor of Science and Doctorate of Dental Medicine. He served in the National Guard, U.S. Army Reserve, and U.S. Navy before joining the Navy full time as a Lieutenant. He served with distinction during the Vietnam War aboard the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt, where his leadership and professionalism reflected the same integrity that would guide him throughout his life. Following his service, Don began a 43-year career as an Endodontist in Atlanta. Known for his warm bedside manner and quick wit, he had a remarkable ability to make even a dreaded dental procedure feel like a social visit. His patients, colleagues, and staff formed lifelong bonds that reflected his generosity and commitment to excellence. Outside the office, Don was a passionate runner and adventurer. He completed 183 marathons and ran a marathon on every continent, including the Western States 100, the Comrades Marathon in South Africa, the Himalayan 100 Mile Stage Race, and the Moscow Goodwill Games. For over four decades, he also ran the Peachtree Road Race each July, a tradition that became a hallmark of his discipline and joy for life. Above all his accomplishments, Don found his greatest happiness in his family. He shared with them his sense of adventure and humor, and took immense pride in their lives and achievements. A celebration of Don's life will be held on November 4, 2025, 10:00 AM, at Kellett Chapel at Peachtree Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Girls on the Run.
