Dorothy FUQUA Obituary

FUQUA, Dorothy Dorothy Chapman Fuqua, 93, died after a brief illness on January 23, 2015 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, GA. Known to all as Dottie, she was surrounded by her loving family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, generous friend, passionate gardener, active community volunteer, and a visionary philanthropist. Born February 2, 1921, in the small rural town of Davisboro, Georgia, Dottie graduated from Davisboro High School with honors and took business classes at Hurst Business College. While working as a secretary at Sears Roebuck in nearby Augusta, she met J. B. Fuqua, a young broadcaster and entrepreneur, whom she married in 1945. In the course of their 61-year marriage, Dottie was J.B.'s devoted partner and best friend, supporting his extraordinary rise to internationally recognized industrialist, Georgia political leader, and philanthropist. The Fuquas endowed the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, the Fuqua Heart Center at Piedmont Hospital, the Dorothy C. Fuqua Conservatory and Orchid House at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, the Fuqua Center for Late Life Depression at Emory, and generously gave to many other educational and community organizations. From relatively humble beginnings, Dottie and J. B. would become friends with many of the most successful business and political leaders of the 20th century. A gracious hostess, she entertained everyone from her dear friend Lady Bird Johnson to the Dalai Lama in her Atlanta home and in the exquisite Japanese gardens she lovingly created over the years. Unchanged by privilege, she was as kind to the local cashier as to a world leader. Known for her poise, grace, and generous spirit, she was greatly loved by all because she loved all greatly. Dottie Fuqua lived a life grounded in a deep faith and guided by the principle that it is not what others can do for you but what you can do for others. She served on the boards of numerous organizations, including the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Skyland Trail, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Research Center, Presbyterian College, Shepherd Center, Lovett School, and many others. Her leadership on behalf of mental illness, health care, and education has changed the lives of thousands. Dottie Fuqua's life truly made the world a gentler, kinder, and more beautiful place. She is survived by her brother, Hugh Chapman, Jr. of Davisboro, GA, her son, J. Rex Fuqua, daughter-in-law, Duvall Schultz Fuqua, of Atlanta, Georgia, 6 grandchildren--Jennifer Fuqua Fowler, Lauren Fuqua Maronnier, Ruth Duvall Fuqua, John Rex Fuqua, Jr., Frances Hattaway Fuqua, and Dorothy Isabel Fuqua, and 2 great grandchildren-Charles and Brooks Fowler. Her other son, Alan Brooks Fuqua, predeceased her in 1970. She is also survived by her friend and caretaker of over 40 years, Mary Nell Stanford. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Piedmont Hospital, Dr. Ellen Frauenthal and her team, and the caregivers who cared so deeply for her: Caroline Echols, Vivian Smith, Sandra Michael, and Frederick Hite. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 31 at 11:00 AM at Northwest Presbyterian Church, 4300 Northside Drive, Atlanta, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Atlanta Botanical Garden, 1345 Piedmont Road, Atlanta, GA 30309 and Skyland Trail, 1961 North Druid Hills Road, Atlanta, GA 30329. Arrangements by H. M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill Chapel, 1020 Spring Street, NW, Atlanta, GA 30309, 404-876-1022.

In loving memory of Mrs. Fuqua,
Dressed in her red and gold at athletic games, parades, and many festivities at Fuqua School, she was always gracious and friendly.
I loved the story of her in the biography about Mr. Fuqua -- she didn't accept the first date request from Mr. Fuqua because it was last minute! He should prepare ahead of time if he wanted her to go out to dinner. What a couple! I will always remember them.

February 2, 2015

Rex,
We are so sorry to hear of your mothers passing. She was loved by so many people! Our family has so many fond memories of your family over the years. She did so much for others as did your dad! You and your family are in our prayers.

Rex and family, I extend to you my deepest sympathy at this sad and difficult time for you. Dottie was indeed a kind, generous, gracious lady. My acquaintance with her came about through my marriage to my late wife, Carolyn Rinker, who was your next door neighbor in Augusta. J.B. and Dottie were Carolyn's godparents, and they hosted our wedding breakfast. Early on in our marriage Carolyn sent Dottie Moravian cookies for Christmas, for which Dottie expressed great delight. That began a tradition of Christmas Moravian cookies, which continued through this most recent Christmas past. Dottie in her gracious way began sending us Georgia pecans. Carolyn died twenty years ago, but I continued what she started. Dottie will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

In 1980, Duke's fledgling business school operated out of the basement of the Social Sciences building. J.B. And Dottie Fuqua's first $10 million gift built a spectacular facility that gave liftoff to the Fuqua School of Business. In 1989, after the fall of the Iron Curtain, the Fuquas again gave millions, this time for programs training Russian managers in needed skills. And then in the ensuing years , the Fuquas (J.B., Dottie and Rex) added millions again for distinguished professorships and a multitude of programs, with a cumulative total of gifts of about $40 million. J. B. And Rex gave funds to honor their beloved Dottie with a beautiful garden and patio. Dottie's Southern elegance, grace and charm were always a joy at Fuqua events, and her warm hospitality at Atlanta events created wonderful memories for so many. I am proud to have been the Dean of the Fuqua School of Business from 2001 to 2007, working with J.B., Dottie and Rex to continue to build one of the world's premier business schools. My wife Josie joins me in wishing well-deserved peace and joy for Dottie and J.B., and strength and fond memories for Rex and Duvall and their family.

JB and Dottie Fuqua were two of the finest , generous and caring people Augusta and Atlanta has had the privilege to call citizens. They gave generously of their estate to our schools, botanical gardens, UGA Terry College , churches, Emory , Duke University , hospitals and other civic needs. They both came from humble beginnings and never forgot the blessings and opportunities that came their way over their lifetimes. They will now be reunited together in heaven along with their youngest son , Allen .

Rex & Extended family.
It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of my first cousin Dorothy. I am so pleased that I decided to call her on 12/28/2014 rather than wait until her birthday in early February.
She and J.B's humble beginnings, success, and sharing with others should be an inspiration for all of us. They both clearly represent the best that America has to offer.
Our prayers are with all the family during this time of need.

Dottie Fuqua has been known to the Bennett family for many years starting with her babysitting with my deceased husband, Larry, almost 80 years ago. Larry was employed at WJBF-TV, Augusta, GA, for over 23 years. I do not need to tell you how much she will be missed...her memory will be here forever & I for one am blessed to have known her. Such a sweet, thoughtful & classy lady whose smile made you feel as if you were someone special...she was a true herorine.

I worked for Fuqua Industries for 9+ years starting from the time the office was moved from Augusta to Atlanta. Mrs. Fuqua was the most beautiful and charming southern ladies I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. When she asked me to help her with a project (which I was honored to help), she always gave me a small gift with a thank you note. She touched my heart in so many ways. Mrs. Fuqua will always be remembered as a sweet lady with her kind and generous spirit. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.
