Edwin LANE Obituary

LANE, III, Edwin Green July 29, 1942 - August 2, 2015 Edwin "Ed" Green Lane, III, passed away Sunday August 2, 2015. He is survived by daughters Susan Brett Lane and Katherine Meredith Lane, as well as their mothers Gloria Lane and Kitty Lane, and his sisters Linda Lane Arnold and Weesie Lane Walker, as well as their spouses and children. Born July 29, 1942 in Nashville, Tn., Ed was a University of Georgia graduate. After college, he moved to New York City, where he worked for a top ad agency. It was there his passion and love for the culinary arts began. He then moved to Atlanta where he was the sales manager for WRNG Radio and was the president of the Atlanta Young Republicans. It was in Atlanta that he dove into real estate, working as the National Director of Real Estate for Jerrico. That job brought him to Lexington as he scouted out new locations for the company. In 1981, Ed started the commercial real estate brokerage Lane Consultants and, later, Lane Communications Group, publisher of The Lane Report, a respected regional business news magazine, as well as a slew of other ancillary publications such as BG Magazines in Lexington and Louisville, NEXT Magazine and Market Reviews for several communities in Kentucky. Ed has also represented the 12th district of Lexington on the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government council since 2005, and was serving his fourth term. In addition to his public service, Ed was passionate about his community. He loved opportunities to support Central Kentucky with his businesses, through philanthropic efforts and his time to lead through service. He has served on the boards of numerous business, arts and civic organizations including the Breeder's Cup Host Committee, UK Sanders-Brown Center of Aging Foundation Board (former chairman), Lexington Downtown Development Authority Board, Lexington-Fayette Urban County Airport Board (board secretary), Kentucky Arts Council, 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games Advisory Committee, LexArts, Lexington Ballet, The Lexington Philharmonic, Better Business Bureau of Lexington, Junior Achievement of the Bluegrass, Mayor's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Committee, Fayette County Equine Task Force, and Commerce Lexington Agribusiness Committee, among others. Ed absolutely loved to go to work every day. He loved his businesses, and maintained a work ethic rarely matched. He was an overachiever and a true optimist, positive no matter the situation. He bravely battled cancer for more than two years, but you wouldn't have known. He was an artist and photographer, an art collector and a supporter of the arts, especially local and young artists. He was passionate about cooking and enjoyed having friends and family over for his spectacular meals. He taught his daughters how to fish; he loved gardening, reading and could talk politics with anyone, no matter their stance. He also loved fast cars - a hobby that earned him the nickname "Fast Eddie" in the '60s. He is preceded in death by his parents Jeanne and Edwin Green Lane, Jr. "Ted". A memorial service will held on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at 7pm at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 3421 Harrodsburg Rd., Lexington, KY 40513. Visitation will be held prior at 6pm. Memorial Contributions are suggested to The Lane Charitable Fund at Bluegrass Community Foundation. www.bgcf.org

I worked for Ed as the editor of The Lane Report and several other publications from 1991 through 1994. He was ever the optimist and realist. He was certainly one of my teachers in this journey. We had our ups and downs in running the editorial department, but at the end of the day Ed would always say, "If we both always agreed with each other then we would only need one of us." I use that wisdom in business and in life. I was relatively new to Lexington when I took the job. Ed always made sure I had a place to go during the holidays. And as the years went by, I'd speak to him once or twice a year, he'd ask me to write an article for him -- for which I did not have the time -- and he would always end the conversation with praise for the work I did while at the magazine. I was shocked to learn of his passing today. With Love and respect for someone who was far from the ordinary. May he rest in peace.

We were introduced to Ed by a dear friend ... his warmth and sincerity were obvious. We were lucky enough to enjoy several of his home-prepared meals; a real treat, to be sure. Ed will be missed by the entire Lexington community.
Offering deep condolences to the family ...

Our deepest sympathies to the Lane family. We both attended high school with Ed at Sandy Springs in Atlanta. He was an energetic dynamo then, too. Rest in peace, Ed Lane.

I will always remember Mr. Lane as a smart and generous man who was quick with a warm smile and a friendly handshake.

I am so grateful to have worked with him on the campaign trail. The 12th District, and Fayette County at-large, will benefit for years to come because of the work and planning performed by Mr. Lane. He will be greatly missed.

Ed Lane created Kentucky's Forbes. He was a great man to know after moving here from New York. He always made me feel right at home.

Serving on the Council with Ed has been a true pleasure. Although many times we would not agree on items, he was always respectful of other's views. His contribution to Lexington is commendable and truly appreciated. Sitting next to him on the Council for the past few months was an eye opening experience, where I learned that he was quite the gentleman and had a great sense of humor. I am thankful for those few months that I have spent sitting beside him, which allowed me an opportunity to get to know him better. Thank you Ed on behalf of Lexington and may you rest in peace!

When I moved to Lexington 25 years ago, Ed Lane was one of the first people I met. I'll never forget his kindness and hospitality.....he was a fine man.
