Evans, GA - Entered into rest on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, Mr. Eugene M. Howerdd, Jr., 86, loving husband of Mrs. Martha Armstrong Howerdd. Eugene Miller Howerdd Jr. was born miraculously on Friday the 13th in November 1934. When he passed on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, he was surrounded by his loved ones and left the earth in Gods' peaceful arms. Gene attended Boys Catholic High, then moved to the DC area to attend Georgetown Preparatory school and Georgetown University where he served as captain of the golf team. In his junior year he married his beloved childhood sweetheart Marty Armstrong in 1954. Gene and Marty began having their six children between 1955 and 1962. After graduation he and Marty move back to Augusta, and he helped start Johnson Lane Brokerage Firm. In 1954 Gene Howerdd, Sr. and Gene Howerdd, Jr. acquired acreage in the blue ridge mountains of Western North Carolina and developed what is known today to be Sapphire Valley Resort and the Country Club of Sapphire Valley. In 1969 he moved he and his family to Atlanta where he went to work with Cousins Properties. In the early 80s Gene joined with three other partners to form Lowery, Racklin, Harrell and Howerdd, pension fund consultants in Atlanta. A few years later he left his partners and became self-employed by forming Howerdd Financial Consulting, Sapphire Valley Realty & Development, and NetInvestmentadvisor.com. He served on the Board of St. Joseph Hospital, Castleberry Foods, Barclays Bank, Federal Home Loan Bank, WFG, Transamerica, and Georgia Railroad Bank. In addition to his family, golf was Gene's passion. He served on the executive committee of USGA and was a member at several clubs including Augusta National Golf Club, Seminole Golf Club, Wade Hampton Golf Club, Peachtree Golf Club, The Honors Course, The Augusta Country Club, Country Club of Sapphire Valley and The Royal and Ancient GC of St. Andrews. Gene is survived by his beloved wife: Marty of 67 years; 6 children: Trey Howerdd, Chris Howerdd, Lisa Howerdd Stargel (Rick), Katherine Howerdd Price, Maura Howerdd Burden (Mark), Lauren Howerdd (Rachel Schwartz). He was affectionately known as "Poppy" to grandchildren Leah Howerdd Gauden(Josh), John Howerdd, Tripp Price, Miller Price, Richard Stargel, Quinn Burden, Owen Burden, and Leo Howerdd; great grandchildren including Rooks and Wells Gauden. He was predeceased by his parents: Gene and Katie Howerdd, Sr.; sister: Mary Joe Leach; niece: Kay Leach; and son-in-law Benny Price. The family extends special thanks to SouthEast Hospice and the case nurse Christel Akers and her team. The family will hold a visitation on Sunday, November 14 from 2:30 until 4:00 P.M. at St Mary on the Hill Catholic Church in Augusta Georgia. A celebratory Mass will be held on Monday, November 15 at 11:00 A.M. at Saint Mary on the Hill Catholic Church and will be live streamed at www.stmaryonthehill.org. A reception will follow at St. Mary on the Hill Parish Hall from 12:00 until 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital, and the American Cancer Society.
