Floy Culbreth Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

Floy Porter Culbreth, 87, of Atlanta died Friday, November 18, 2005. Born in Sylvester, Georgia on October 1, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Ashton and Mary Lou Westbrook Porter. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Ammonette Porter. After moving to Atlanta, she became an active member of Grace United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. Later, she joined Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. There, her involvement extended to the UMW Circle group as well as being a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. At both churches, she was a member of the Altar Guild. She was a founding member of the Atlanta Chapter of United Cerebral Palsy and established the first day care center in Atlanta for children with cerebral palsy. She had also developed a love for gardening. Her greatest legacy, however, is her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Roy B. Culbreth; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Mary Long Howard of Atlanta; a daughter and son-in-law, Thea and Bill Chamberlain of Decatur; three grandchildren, Megan Howard, Wes Jones, and Bryan Jones, all of Atlanta; and a brother, Joe Westbrook Porter of Villa Rica. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Atlanta, 3300 NE Expressway Access Road, Atlanta, GA 30341. Funeral services will be held at 2 O'clock on Monday, November 21, in the Chapel of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements by H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill. (404)876-1022.

My childhood memories are full of the loving arms of Mrs. Culbreth, my other mother. When I ran away from home, I ran to her house,(next door.) I will forever treasure her special laugh, her huge hugs and open door. I remember summer Bible school at Grace with her. She opened my eyes to loving the world of ballet, fishing in the mountains, and fried cheese. Living next door to the Culbreths for so many years, I could fill a newspaper with wonderful memories of times together. These memories I carry with me daily, and will continue to do so. I know you will all miss her deeply and I know we will all see her again in Heaven, because Floy is surely with God and the angels today! I can imagine she and my mom are playing cards right now laughing about their wonderful lives.

May God's peace and love flood your lives with the wonderful memories of your wife, mom, grandmom and our friend. Love from the depths of my heart.

I feel very blessed to have had Aunt Floy in my life. I shall always warmly remember her comforting love which she abundantly shared with everyone. I am so thankful that we got to visit a few years ago… where Mary Ellen and I were graciously welcomed by her and Uncle Roy with unconditional love. She will be missed deeply by all.

Our deepest sympathy and prayers goes out to Uncle Roy, Thea, Bill, Jim, Mary Long, Megan, and Wes, Bryan and all her loving family and friends. We pray for the repose of her soul as she goes to a new and rewarding life with Jesus. God Bless all and Peace In Christ.

All Our Love,

Jim and Mary Ellen
