Dr. Harbutt epitomized class, professionalism, and grace. He would give you a lot of freedom, but also steer you where you needed to go. Once he did so, he would welcome your own approaches, findings, and conclusions. He knew how to say just the right thing at just the right timeand nothing more, thus quietly empowering his students. And, perhaps because his life and career had transcended hemispheres and professional fields, he possessed a sense of perspective, irony, and low-key humor about matters.
He brought that sense of idiosyncratic perspective, equilibrium, and calm wisdom to his eloquent writing and nuanced teaching. His selections of reading material were also excellent, as he knew how find the essentials. Indeed, he seemed to know just how to find the essentials with everything, and Dr. Harbutt possessed a great sense of vision and artistry as wellhe could give shape and life to intellectual abstractions. And while he knew how to say just the right thing and nothing more, one could easily converse with him; a five-minute perfunctory meeting in his office could then turn into a forty-five minute conversation about politics or what have you.
After I passed my Master's exams, Dr. Harbutt told me that I must now call him "Fraser." However, I never didI had too much respect for him.

Fraser Harbutt was my graduate school adviser at Emory and, from day one, he was the most wonderful mentor and friend, far beyond any simple call of duty. Supportive, funny, insightful, he taught me a lot about history and teaching, but more than that, he was just a great person with whom to spend time. Rest in peace, dear Fraser; you will be remembered and missed! Heartfelt condolences to Marysia and their family, as well!

Fraser Harbutt was my favorite professor at Emory and the best advisor a college student could ask for. He was an incredibly warm person who gave me constant encouragement and wisdom while I was in school. Emory, and the world, have suffered a great loss.

May the God of all comfort strengthen the family during this time of deep sorrow. Those who pass on, God keeps in his memory because they are precious in his eyes. My sincerest condolences. Psalms 116:15.
