George Mays Obituary
Family-Placed Death Notice
George Winton Mays, Jr. left us to be with God on January 14, 2004 after succumbing to a lung disease. George lived in Jacksonville, FL 27 years with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a loving husband to Carole Mays for 33 years; a dedicated father to Melissa Holloway and Winton Mays; a proud grandfather to Brittany and Mayble Holloway; a loving son to his mother Janet Mays, father, the late George Mays, Sr., his supportive brother, Richard Mays, and nieces, Kristen and Terri Mays all of Atlanta, GA. He also loved all of his extended family and friends. George was a devoted employee of Holophane Lighting Company for 19 years and touched many lives through his business relations. He also left behing many many close friends through his involvement with the community and love for athletic development. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 17th at 2 pm at cory-Kerlin Funeral Home, 940 Cesery Blvd., Jacksonville, FL. A reception will follow at the family's home. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Lung Association or to the Mayo Clinic will be greatly appreciated.

Carol and Winton, Pris and I were at the birmingham southern, UGA baseball game a little over a week ago and I tried to see Winton. A family there told us the tragic news about George. We are all truly sorry, our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

During the brief time we had with George, we considered him the epitome of the perfect neighbor--always the friendly wave, smile and pleasant greeting. Bob will especially miss their "sidewalk conferences to solve all the problems of Jacksonville and the whole country". And who will bring in our mail when we go out of town?

Please accept my condolences on the loss of George. I was working in the Atlanta office when George was hired. He was such a sweetheart and pleasant to work with! I can't remember him ever being rude or difficult or angry. I haven't had much contact with him during the last five years, but will always remember him fondly.

Dear Carole and Family,
Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss of George.
George and I went through training together in 1985 at Holophane and stayed with Holophane as friends, since that time. He was a wonderful person, who will be deeply missed at Holophane and also by his clients. He was highly respected because of his professionalism and dedication and greatly liked because of his personality, integrity and always fun loving and upbeat attitude.
We won't be the same as a company without George representing us in his special way in Florida.

It is very sad to know that George is no longer with us.
My apologies for not attending his funeral,we are in the process of selling a townhouse that we have and there were inspections and appointments with our broker and lawyer that were not able to cancel.
I feel very fortunate of had known George. He was always a great friend.

To the Mays family, I wish you consolement in your time of bereavement. The lives your husband/father/brother/uncle/grandf ather has touched are beyond comprehension. The one instance I will always remember personally of Mr. Mays was always providing me a laugh when playing baseball, and telling me once, "See if you can hit a home run on the first pitch," and I did! He was obviously a man of faith in people and so carry on that eloquent characteristic of trust and faith in all you do. I just got the news and I am deeply sadened. George was a great person. I am on my 8th year with Holophane and I can remember some of my first dealings with the company and George was there with his giant jovial smile. He was very kind to me and made me feel right at home with the company I had just started to work for. He was very generous with his knowledge and after meeting him I always looked forward to working with him or simply getting a chance to chat with him.

I have known George for the 19 years he has been with Holophane. Although we were separated by many miles, we had the opportunity to work together closely on a number of occasssions and we were generally together at least once per year for sales meetings or other occassions. George has been a true professional and has represented Holophane with pride and respect. He made close relationships with customers and peers. I will miss him.
