Family-Placed Death Notice
NORMAN, George MR. GEORGE EDWARD NORMAN Atlanta, GA - Entered into rest Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at Piedmont Hospital. Mr. George Edward Norman, a native of Augusta, husband of Mrs. Lisa Johnson Norman. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. from Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel, Paine College. Interment will be in Westover Memorial Park. The family will receive friends this evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Elim Baptist Church, 2359 Mt. Auburn St., Augusta, GA. Mr. Norman is survived by a step-daughter, Mauri West of Atlanta, GA; two brothers, Silas, Jr. of Bloomfield Township, MI and James Howard (Lois) of Rochester, NY; two sisters, Jessye of Croton-on-Hudson, NY and Elaine Sturkey of McKinney, TX; seven nephews, four great nephews, two great nieces, four godchildren and a host of cousins and friends. *In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Atlanta Fisk Club, P. O. Box 1976, Duluth, GA 30096. W. H. Mays Mortuary, 1221 James Brown Boulevard, Augusta, GA 30901 (706) 722-6401.

My deepest sympathy to the family of George Norman. My father, Dr. Allen N. Brown, was his mother's physician. His sister Jessye and I became friends when I was a ballerina at The Dance Theatre of Harlem. she subsequently became a board member. I remember the difficulty of losing my brother Stephen and know how difficult this transition can be. George shared a momentous and historic occasion with me. I accompanied him to witness his sister, the Great Jessye Norman, debut at Carnegie Hall in New York! George and I met in 2001 while working at BellSouth. We became friends and remained in contact with each other and would occasionally go to a concert, lunch, and dinner. George had a zest for good living and I will truly miss his big voice, his hugs, his dining and travel wisdom, his love of BMWs, and his presence. George and I grew up together as kids around Mt.Calvary his father was my family deacon for many years. We grew to love each other as family, because that's what we were,Mt Calvary church family. He was always a grand gentleman but always teased me about something it did not matter and then we laughed and whenever I've spoken with him thru the years, it was like we had never missed a beat and he flashed that beautiful smile and we spoke about long ago... remember when. I remember as a child singing "George, George,George of the jungle, watch out for that tree" as he rode his bike everyday up and down the lane next to our house. He would always pretend he was gonna crash into one of the trees. It never got old with him. That's the kind of sport he was. He did it just to give us little ones a few brief moments of joy.You could find the same kind of sweet spirit in each member of the family. This is a devastating loss and my prayers are with the family during your grief.
