Henrietta Turnquest Obituary

Henrietta Turnquest, attorney and former Georgia state legislator, died of complications of Alzheimer's March 29 in Mobile, Alabama. A memorial service was held April 26. She was 73.

Her family recalled she was initially one of fewer than 50 black female attorneys in Georgia and among the first handful of women of color elected to the Georgia General Assembly. She became the first Black woman to serve as an assistant floor leader - for Governor Roy Barnes - and spearheaded the integration of the Georgia Association for Women Lawyers.

Turnquest represented DeKalb County in the state House of Representatives from 1990 until 2002.

The family requests that those interested in donating to a cause in her memory contact [email protected].

She was an outstanding woman, and my friend. I was saddened to find out that she had died. If anyone is foolish enough to try to replace her, they will have an extraordinary task. She was one of a kind, and I was lucky to have her as my friend. My condolences to her family.
