Henry Levi Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

LEVI, Henry Henry Baldauf Levi, 58, of Atlanta, Georgia died on October 27, 2011. Born in Evansville, Indiana, Henry received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Vanderbilt University and his Juris Doctorate, with honors, at the University of Texas. In 1978 he moved to Atlanta and joined the law firm of King & Spalding. After two years he joined the firm later known as Gambrell & Stolz, where he became a partner in 1983. Gambrell & Stolz joined with Baker Donelson in 2007. Henry's law practice concentrated in corporate-related law. He represented public and private companies in a variety of industries and in a wide array of transactions, including private and public capital formation, broker-dealer regulation, real estate syndication, technology licensing, and corporate governance. In his 33 years of law practice he quietly and successfully mentored young attorneys. His door was always open to answer their questions and give thorough explanations and directions. Henry's reputation of keeping his clients' interests and goals in mind was well-earned. He was known as being totally fastidious. Everyone knew to give Henry the most complicated documents so he could find even the most minuscule fault and fix it. He was a leader, whose credibility was without question or peer. He was listed in Georgia Super Lawyers and named one of Georgia's Legal Elite. His memberships included the Atlanta and American Bar Associations, and the State Bar of Georgia. Henry was co-chair of the Baker Donelson Atlanta Pro Bono Committee and he supported the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyer Foundation by serving as a long-time member of the Foundation's Advisory Board. Henry supported Atlanta Legal Aid and Georgia Legal Services. He was a 33-year member of The Temple and served on its board as a Trustee from 1985-1988 and 2001-2004 and as Vice-President from 1994-1995. Henry was elected to the board of the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce, Southeast Region in 2010. He was Secretary and an active member of the Executive Committee of the U.S. Friends of Ofanim from 2005 until 2011. Henry was a lifetime St. Louis Cardinals fan, and since 1978 loved his many seasons of playing basketball in JCC leagues. He is survived by Claudia and their children, Marisa and Brett; his parents, Ruth and Richard Levi of Blowing Rock, NC; and his sisters and brothers-in-law Selma Levi and Jay Klein of Baltimore, and Wendy and Parker Lienhart of Chicago. Memorial donations can be made to The Temple Holland Youth Library Fund (1589 Peachtree St., NE Atlanta, GA 30309; http://www.the-temple.org) or One Family Fund (P.O. I was so surprised to see Henry's name in the UT Law memorials. I was in law school with Henry and thought of him every time Atlanta was mentioned. From what Ihave read, Henry maintained his wonderful love of people since school. He truly was an unforgetable person. My condolences go out to his family and friends. -Faith Orlowski

To the family. . . Please accept my condolences on the passing of Henry. Henry was a true "brother" in ZBT at Vanderbilt with his positive and caring nature, while being very diligent in his studies. I always saw him as a leader. These traits lasted until the day he died. I'll also always remember our participation in IM sports and especially the pick-up basketball games on the patio at ZBT. So sorry for your loss.

Henry was an unforgettable pleasant person who made one feel good and happy to be visiting with him. He will live on in my heart.

From a very early age, Henry sought to teach and quietly influence others in a most kind and unselfish manner. The lessons he taught me as a youth in religious school served to inspire and ignite a lifetime yearning to learn and emulate. I am eternally grateful to Henry for this and can only imagine how many others, over the years, must have experienced the same effect.

I remember the many seasons that we played basketball (together and against) at the community center - he was always one of those guys you wanted on your team - although our paths only crossed on the basketball court, he was one of the nicest guys I had ever met and known - I am so sad for your loss

Please accept my sincerest condolences on the passing of Henry. I will remember with fondness our eager expectation of Volume 3 of William Manchester's biography of Churchill (which was never completed!) and exchanging news about our families. Kind regards to your family. Karen Walker

Henry was among the very first guys I met as a Vandy freshman in the Fall of '71. I still fondly remember those many late-night poker games in Reinke Hall and the "friendly" pick-up b-ball games after dinner on the ZBT patio. I am very saddened to learn of his passing.

His wisdom and patience will be greatly missed down here in SWGA.

I last spoke with Henry a month or so ago. I had called intending to cheer him up. To my surprise, his voice was firm and he was quite upbeat in spite of the circumstances. In the end, he was cheering me up, not vice versa. It's how I will always remember Henry - as a leader and as a friend. Larry Zuckerman (Chattanooga, TN), VU '75, ZBT

For the benefit of Henry's family whom I do not know, and to echo the sentiments of my ZBT brother, Henry was one of those "moral beacon" guys who you often recalled for all of the right reasons long after our college days. May his memory continue to be a blessing.

I played in the basketball league with Henry. I was impressed by the way his stamina, energy, and game improved during his treatments. A fortitude and optimism not to be denied.

We also took several walks together around Chastain Park when he couldn't play basketball. Our talks were not mundane, but focused on work and philosophy.

Henry even got me a client that I had for a few years.

We often corresponded via email where his good wit, which I very much appreciated, shone through.

Though I didn't see him a lot otherwise, there was a bond, one that I now many other people shared with him.

A superb guy.

The way Henry lived his life is an example for all of us. While we will miss him greatly, his spirit will live on in his children, other family members, and the many friends whose lives he touched.

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Henry, my fraternity brother in ZBT at Vanderbilt. He was a "stand-up" guy - known as the one brother who you would not be afraid to have date your sister. I know he will be missed by friends, coworkers and family.
