Hugh Alton Carter Jr.

Hugh Carter Obituary

Hugh Alton Carter Jr. died on Sunday, July 23 in his home in Tampa, surrounded by family. He was 80.

Born on Sept. 29, 1942, in Americus, he was the son of Ruth and Hugh A. Carter Sr.

Carter held a high-level post in Jimmy Carter's White House and owned a book-publishing business in Atlanta.

Known as "Sonny," he served four years as Special Assistant to the President for Administration, reporting directly to President Carter.

The son of a first cousin of Jimmy Carter, he was a key organizer of the "Peanut Brigade," the Plains-based action committee that worked to get Carter elected president.

"My family and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Hugh "Sonny" Carter. He was not only close family, but he was crucial in my grandfather's election as president by organizing the famous Peanut Brigade, and he skillfully implemented true zero-based budgeting within my grandfather's White House," said Jason Carter, chairman of the Carter Center.

I got to know Hugh when our daughters played softball together. Got to know him over a few lunches. I found him to be a kind, gentle man. RIP High Carter.

Hugh Carter was a gentleman and a very kind person. One of his many contributions to the success of his second cousin´s 1976 presidential election was co-chairing Target 20, an early insight of Hamilton Jordan´s master plan for Carter´s presidential run. Target 20 referred to the plan for Carter to qualify first among all potential candidates for matching federal campaign funds by raising $5,000 in each of 20 states. Several of us worked on this project with Hugh and the Carter campaign showed that it was not simply a local or regional campaign by being the first potential candidate to qualify in 20 states, with $5,000 raised in each, for the matching federal money. Hugh was especially proud of his success in running Darby Printing for many years. He was a gift and a rock to his friends and family. Hugh will be missed.

He was both the BEST and without doubt one of the kindest bosses I ever had. He always "had your back". I am so sad to hear of his death.
