Ivan BAILEY Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

BAILEY, Ivan Ivan Bailey, 68: Renowned Blacksmith Ivan Bailey, a Georgia artist and teacher widely considered one of America's greatest artistic blacksmiths, passed away at his farm in Monticello on September 9. Born in Oregon, Bailey entered a Christian Brothers' monastery in Napa, California but left the novitiate to obtain a B.A. in art at Portland State University. He then studied at Penland School, North Carolina and received his MFA in 1971. A forge workshop with Alex W. Bealer, author of the seminal The Art of Blacksmithing and Bailey's future father-in-law, altered the course of Bailey's career forever. In 1972 he won a Fulbright fellowship but accepted a larger German cultural exchange grant to study for a year under Professor Fritz Ulrich at the Craft School of Aachen, Germany. Bailey's original commissioned work is represented in hundreds of private and public installations and collections, including Savannah's Olympic Torch monument. His many honors include the Governor's Award of the Georgia Council for the Arts and the Georgia Association of the American Institute of Architects Award for Craftsmanship. He was a founding member of the Artist Blacksmith's Association of North America. Bailey retired to Monticello, GA seven years ago. Bailey led an exemplary life, as an artist, a father, and a grandfather. Bailey's sons insist that "he was the best effing father of all time." There will be a private cremation overseen by Cremation Society of Georgia. A celebration of Bailey's life will be held at Stationside at the King Plow Arts Center, 887 W. Marietta Street NW, Atlanta on Sun., Sept. 15 at 2:00 pm. He is survived by his son Oliver and daughter-in-law Lindsay Bailey of Decatur, Georgia, and their children Scarlett and Colvin; his son Warren and daughter-in-law Rebecca Hagenson Bailey of Brooklyn, New York; and his sister Linda Lisac. The family requests in leu of flowers donations may be sent to the Artist Blacksmith's Association of North America: ABANA Central Office 259 Muddy Fork Road Jonesborough, TN 37659

Ivan and I were pals in college when he lived at the "Caruthers Hilton" in Portland. We were lucky enough to cross paths in Germany, and we got together when he came out west for visits, as well as one time when I made it to Decatur. We always had lots of laughs over a few beers. We will miss you Ivan!

I remember Mr. Bailey from many, many years ago when he had a shop at the old Murray Mill.
My friend, Kimo Chamberlain had a neon bending shop there also and he thought very highly of Mr.Bailey.
He was a nice man with a remarkable gift for creating art.

Godspeed to him.

Ivan played a defining role in my past, being influential in my becoming established as a young adult in Savannah, GA, many years ago. When he and Janet and Oliver moved away, I lost track of the family. I too, have relocated, but a friend who follows such things today brought the news of Ivan's passing to my attention. So sorry to hear but, through the connection, I was able to visit his Facebook page to learn that the same vitality, humbly grateful appreciation of life, and "cock-eyed optimism" for which I so fondly remember him, defined Ivan as he continued on his path. The world has lost a truly talented artist who was obviously devoted to and adored by his family and friends. He has left a legacy that will be cherished. Happy trails, Ivan ...

I knew Ivan from a men's group here in Atlanta in the 90s. I had lost track of Ivan over the years, but think of him every time I see an interesting piece of metal work. He was a sweet and generous man and I know how much he loved his sons. Blessings to his spirit on its journey and to the Baileys in this time of parting.
