To the Camp Family, please accept condolences from my family. Please be assured that Mr. Camp is in a better place, and that he left such a wonderful legacy of discipline, educational and musical excellence...as well as love for his fellow human-beings. There was never a dull moment in his life...and, if he ever had a bad day or challenge, you never knew of it. He lived in the moment and believed the moment should be perfect!
I, like many others, looked upon Mr. Camp as a father figure. Starting with my days at Capitol Avenue Elementary (in Summerhill), where he taught me and many others the art of reading music and science of playing the saxophone - to transitioning to the newly established M.L. Kings, Jr. Middle School - through my days at Kentucky State University and beyond, Mr. Camp was always there as a mentor and friend. Thus, I can honestly say...he was one of the most important males and father-like figures in my life. Jarvis, you are a blessed man for having such a father [as James L. Camp] in your life. To Mrs. Camp, thank you for the many Saturdays (and some weekdays) of sharing your home during the many times Mr. Camp would bring a bunch of wide-eyed band-members and creative dance group students to your home before some-type of festival of recital. You always made sure we hungry kids from Summerhill and surrounding areas had something to eat. You were always so gracious. Thanks for sharing of yourself, and for sharing such a demanding...but wonderful soul [in your husband] with so many of us. I attribute a lot of wonderful successes in my life to Mr. Camp's teaching, his demands, and his caring ways. May GOD Bless you, and may HE continue leading you and Jarvis to a peaceful place, enabling you to lean upon Mr. Camp's wonderful memories to get you through your day.

To the Camp family, With heart-filled sorrow, the Staples family would like to express our condolences on the passing of Mr. Camp. As a young band director in the metro Atlanta area, he was an inspiration to me and also assisted me as I prepared my bands for festival. His wit and humor made him a joy to be around. The master has added another great musician to the heavenly band. May GOD bless you and give you comfort during this time.

To the Camp family,
With heart-filled sorrow, I was very hurt to find out Mr. Camp had passed. I've known Mr. Camp for many many years. Mr. Camp was the first band director that taught my youngest son how to play the trumpet at an early age. He was such a wonderful person. Very respectful, mannerable, happy and full of joy. We loved him as family. It was a great joy for him when his son Jarvis was born.
My husband and I was welcomed into their home when they first got it. They were so excited! The Camp's hospitality was outstanding. Mr. Camp was just like a son to me. Whenever he saw me he had hugs and outstretched arms with a big greeting smile.
My son and the rest of the family and I will treasure his legacy as a great band director and a loving, cheerful human being. He was my son's idol.
We are saddened but we also know that God doesn't make any mistakes. That's why we as a family thank God for Mr. James Camp for being apart of our lives.

James Camp was the epitome of an educator. I had the pleasure of working with him for many years at Martin Luther King, Jr Middle School. His mentorship of hundreds of students over the years was invaluable. He loved them as if they were his own and they knew it. He will be sorely missed.

It was a pleasure to heve met and known Mr. Camp. I was an advanced band student in his class from 6th - 8th grades at M L King, Jr. Middle School. I loved how every year the band, chorus and 8th grade students traveled to Florida. We had such a great time in the band. Mr. Camp served as more than just a great band teacher, he was also a great role-model and father figure. Not only did we have one of the largest bands, we also had the largest group of band parents. Our group of band parents was so large, they had to have their own bus when we traveled somewhere to perform. Just a testament of how we all believed in, loved and adored Mr. Camp! May God richly bless and keep you Mrs. Camp and Jarvis.

Mr. James Camp was a dear friend as well as band instructor to my oldest son, Douglas Curate, Sr., at King Middle School. Every time we saw each other it was joyous. He loved what he did and he was gifted. He made an impact not only upon my son, but many other sons and daughters that attended King Middle School. I used to wait for my son to come home with stories about Mr. Camp at band rehearsal. They were hilarious however, he reached children and gave them an appreciation for music. His legacy is the children he educated. May God bless his family and know that God knows your sorrow. God is a comforter and a healer. Be blessed and know you all are in our prayers.

My deepest condolences to the Camp family. Mr. James L. Camp, Jr. will be missed by many. There are many of us that as children Mr. Camp not only taught us to be excellent musicians, but demanded excellence from us overall. He left a lasting impression on generations.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School family has lost a true legend, but he most certainly will never be forgotten.
The band in heaven will most definitely get Superior ratings from here on.

You have my deepest condolences for your loss. Mr. Camp was a musical and teaching icon. The best band director ever!! He taught me how to play an instrument at King and promoted me to advanced band before I left. That skill he gave me earned me a college scholarship. I will never forget Mr. Camp, he will truly be missed by all.

Earth has no sorrow that heaven can not heal.
Mr. Camp was the Greatest Band teacher ever. Although I was in the chorus at King, I still had the pleasure of knowing him. Mr. Camp was a small man with a big heart they didn't take no mess. It showed each & every time the band performed. Rest in paradise..
