NYGAARD, James Allen

James Allen Nygaard, fondly known as Jimmy, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025, at the age of 90. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Jimmy will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and dedication to his family, friends, and community.

Born in Atlanta, on April 14, 1935, Jimmy was the son of Vernor Christian Nygaard and Helen Sproul Nygaard. After graduating from Northside High School in 1953, he attended the University of Georgia. He pursued various business ventures before founding Sewell Printing, which he successfully operated for over 50 years, retiring in 2023.

Jimmy's love for the outdoors began in his childhood, exploring the woods near his home. A committed conservationist, he supported Ducks Unlimited, serving as Georgia State Chairman in 1994, and in regional fundraising roles. He was also a longtime member of the Capital City Club.

An avid outdoorsman, Jimmy enjoyed hunting trips and hosting friends with warm meals and fellowship. He cherished time spent with loved ones, whether in a duck blind, a dove field, or fishing off his dock.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Rivers Nygaard; his son, Robert "Robbie" Nygaard; his brother, Robert "Bob" Nygaard; and his sister, Mary Helen Price. He is survived by his companion, Jean Adams; brothers, William "Bill" Nygaard and Christian "Chris" Nygaard; son, Jamie Nygaard; stepchildren, Alden Rivers Potts and Rafe Rivers; and grandchildren, Justin Nygaard, Jonathan Nygaard, Christian Nygaard, Olivia Nygaard, Carter Potts Jr., Brooks Potts, Emmalou Rivers, and Rowan Rivers. He is also survived by his loyal black lab, Jackson.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on January 6, 2026, at Peachtree Presbyterian Church, Atlanta. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by the service at 11:00 AM. A catered reception will follow. Interment will be on January 7, at Arlington Memorial Park, in Sandy Springs.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Ducks Unlimited or Peachtree Presbyterian are requested, supporting causes Jimmy cherished.
