I am currently visiting Atlanta today to visit Shepherd Center.
Two and a half years ago I suffered a severe brain injury from a fall on June 22. After many days at Lee Memorial Hospital intensive care trauma center, I was flown to Shepherds for what was many, many more days for brain recovery.
Although I'm not able to remember those many days, thank the Lord, I know I am alive and very well today because of the kind, skilled, caring staff and facility of Shepherds.
I personally came today with my husband Dan to say thank you and bring HOPE to others. It's difficult some days to hold onto but Shepherds nourished my HOPE.
God Bless

Dear Alana,
My sincere sympathy to you and your family in the loss of your dear son James. I just learned of his passing Mon. Eve (1/6) during a phone call to my friend in Atlanta. I wish I had known just one day earlier as I would have driven up for the service on the 6th. I really would have wanted to be there.
As you know, Shepherd Center is very dear to my heart, having volunteered at the original 6 bed center which led me to a career change to physical therapy. My short time as a PT at Shepherd was most rewarding and with very fond memories.
Jame's passing is of great loss to Shepherd Center as well as to entire community. But the bond between all staff is so strong at Shepherd- unlike most other facilities- and your strong and faithful dedication, that James work will always carry on.
My prayers and heartfelt sympathy are with you, Alana. My blessings.

My sincere condolences to Mrs. Shepherd and the rest of the Shepherd family. To say James was a special person is an understatement. He made a mark on my life and I am forever grateful for having the chance to get to know him and to work with him at the Shepherd Center. With heartfelt sympathy and love,

My condolences to the Shepherd family! I was a patient there in 2010 and James came to my room on the first or second day I was there. He was always encouraging me and all the patients and I enjoyed our interaction.
We both shared a love for SEC football and by some miracle my Miss State bulldogs beat his UGA bulldogs in 2010 so I got bragging rights and never let him forget it.
He will be missed but his legacy will live forever.

To Alana,
I never met your son personally but SC has been my hospital since I moved here to Atlanta in 1992, and Dr. Donald Leslie was my doctor all that time until he decided to no longer see patients. In the last 10 months, I have lost both my parents...my Mother passed 2 days before Christmas 1918, and my Father passed a day before my birthday in October. Losing a husband and a son is tragic...but losing one before a holiday is even more so. My heart goes out to you Mrs. Shepherd. May God bless you and everything you do for others.

I spoke to James 3 days before his death. He was a great uncle, and always had a smile. I had prayer with him before I left and said looked forward to visiting him again, but it didn't happen, the Lord sent an angel for James where James is in no more pain and walking on the streets of gold. James is with his Dad, who he missed dearly.

As a former patient of Shepherd Center, my recovery seems complete. I was taken to Shepherd in 1995 after a four-wheeler accident. In a coma for one month, my local doctors and family learned of Shepherd and I was taken then. Now, when people ask about my status, I respond, "by the Grace of God and good doctors at Shepherd, here I am." Blessings on the legacy of the family. I had wonderful contact with Alana.

I am so sorry to read about the passing of James. We became good friends while he walked the halls of the Shepherd Center when I was a patient there in 2007. James Shepherd lived a life filled with family love and community opportunities. I'm honored that I was a part of Shepherd Spinal Center at the beginning at West Paces Ferry Hospital with Dr David Apple.
James Shepherd, Jr was an incredible man who demonstrated a truly exemplary spirit of courage.
Three years ago, I decided to take a tour of the Shepherd Center and was excited to see the early
pictures displayed in the front foyer. To my surprise, I found myself right there in the staff photo on the front of WPFH. After the tour concluded, I decided to have lunch and enjoy the chance to be
somewhere that had been so special to me while in college.
While I was sitting there, I was excited and started a conversation with the two men seated at the table beside me telling them my Shepherd Center story.
But the best surprise of the day was for me
I was having lunch with both Mr. James Shepherd, Sr
And his son James. We reminisced but more
talking about what we're going to get to see in
the future. I felt that chance meeting with them was such a gift to me both personally and professionally
When I left the center for UT I became a special education and medical professional as a result of my days at Shepherd Center.
I pray we will all continue the mission for successful lives for all without limits to honor how James travels now without limits today
