Jefferson Michael "Fuzzy" Cawthon

Jefferson Cawthon Obituary

In a bar, a bar was born. That bar grew into Fuzzy's Place, where owner "Fuzzy" Cawthon served up a blend of fun, food and music for nearly 30 years.

"It's one of the last local watering holes left in Atlanta owned by a local guy," said Brad Johnson of Atlanta. "It draws a cast of characters because Fuzzy was a character."

Business people crowd Fuzzy's Place at lunch for a menu developed by legendary chef Joe Dale. By happy hour, there is a mix of people in the bar. Seven nights a week when the live music begins about 8 p.m., the crowd is younger.

The atmosphere is low-key and the decor is unpretentious. The music room has a garish classic Chevrolet mural behind the stage, which showcases jazz singer Francine Reed with Java Monkey or the Breeze Kings with Tommy Brown or, every Wednesday night, Mike Veal.

That's just the way Mr. Cawthon wanted it.

"He was very much a character, a free spirit," said his brother, Chris Cawthon of Grayson. "He wanted a place to hang out with friends and have a cocktail and draw a paycheck."

The memorial service for Jefferson Michael "Fuzzy" Cawthon, 56, of Atlanta is at 11 a.m. today at Fuzzy's Place, 2015 N. Druid Hills Road. He died of a heart attack Oct. 24 at the Decatur residence of his mother, Martha Jo Cawthon. The body was cremated. Wages & Sons Funeral Home, Stone Mountain, was in charge of arrangements.

In the 1970s, Mr. Cawthon and his friends gathered at Alexander's Eagle on Buford Highway. Chatting with bartender Jerry Rooks, they decided to open a bar of their own in 1977.

By 1983, Mr. Cawthon was sole owner, with Mr. Rooks as bartender and some regulars running a bar tab of $1,000 a month.

"You could walk in there one time, and Fuzzy would introduce himself and you could order, say, a Jack and Coke. You could walk in a year later, and Fuzzy would remember your name and what you drink," said Harold Kelly of Dunwoody.

Music made the club. "It's just one of those small rooms that is a little musical taste of heaven," said Steve McRay of Dunwoody, Java Monkey keyboardist and vocalist.

"Oh, my God. The name Fuzzy's has been so instrumental in my career," said Ms. Reed, of Atlanta. "So many people have seen me there. He gave me a lot of work when I didn't have a lot of work."

"Fuzzy's is like Cheers in Atlanta to me. You see the same people sitting at the same spot at the bar. And the food is good. I like to eat. That was part of my pay, good food and a little pay."

Musicians drop by just to sit in the audience. Clint Black asked Mr. Cawthon to prepare Thanksgiving dinner for his crew when they were in Atlanta, Mr. Rooks said.

Fuzzy the man and Fuzzy's the bar were known around the world.

"I was in Paris and a man said, 'Hey, I've seen you in Fuzzy's,'–" Mr. McRay said.

There are no other immediate survivors.

I was thinking about the jobs I've had, the kitchens I worked in, the clubs I've work at...
Then I spent an hour thinking, reminiscing about Fuzzy's. I miss that place, those people, that man.
The best boss I've ever had, truly one of the most lovable people to ever walk this planet. Miss ya, Fuzz!!

Even though it has been six years since his death, Fuzzy and I dated at UGA. Good times, and yes, he was a character...fun-loving and spirited. He will be missed....certainly that memory. Mary Karle Woodruff

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

As a regular visitor for 20+ years, I've seen Fuzzy's smiling face so many times and it always made me smile. He embodies the ultimate Southern host-ensuring visitors feel welcome & taken care of. Fuzzy's is my welcome spot where I always felt comfortable and safe, alone or with others. Fuzzy's is home away from home & my long time friends working there are part of Fuzzy's legacy. Being a friendly & caring person, he picked his staff for the same qualities. Thank you Fuzzy for such a welcoming and warm staff and seeing your smiling face over the years. Your family & friends share the grief in losing you. I sent warm and comforting thoughts to Fuzzy's family, may you be strengthened by those who surround you and share your memories.

Fuzzy actually introduced my husband and me. It is one of my great regrets that I never went to Fuzzy's place, especially after reading all of the entries. We saw each other over the years at games and he always liked to remind me that he introduced us. I always had a special place in my heart for him. He was one of a kind. To Susan Rogers who also wrote in this book, I would love to hear from you. Sounds like you knew him well and we are both from Monroe. We are in the phone book under Mike Oakes aka Maddog. To the Cawthon family, I think you should really get some kind of peace by knowing how truly well loved he was. I think a lot of our Bulldog men are really so soft hearted and they just didn't get to show it until later. It definitely comes across that Fuzzy was that kind of man. God Bless...Elaine Blanton Oakes, Thomasville and Monroe, GA

During my stepfather's recent illness and death, Fuzzy was the first one there with food and warm thoughts for my family. He and his staff's generosity and kindness made a difficult time a little easier. That's just the kind of guy Fuzzy was: A true gentleman. I'm sure he and Brophy are watchin' ball and having a drink together right now. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

Every year since I left Atlanta 9 years ago I come to Atlanta about twice a year and immediately head to Fuzzy's to see Fuzzy and all the old regulars and to make sure my tab is clear. I think I'm clean, but Fuzzy's knows. In a sense we all owe Fuzzy. We still have a tab. Thanks for the memories, and RIP. H. Glen

We all have very fond memories of Mike, especially his awesome car in high school. He was the coolest guy in our neighborhood. Also, Alice was fortunate enough to visit Fuzzy’s on occasion and Mike was kind enough to supply her with free drinks. He will be greatly missed. My mom, sisters and I would like to send our condolences to Mrs. Cawthon and Chris at the passing of Mike. We used to live two doors down from Mr. & Mrs. Cawthon when they lived on Carter Road. I was the girl always tagging behind Chris when he played outside!!

I did not have the pleasure of knowing Mike very well because of the 10+ years gap in our ages, but I do remember how proud his parents (and Chris) were of him. Even today, I can still see Mike and Chris out in the street throwing the football.

I know that he was much loved and will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you both during this time.

Fuzzy once was a true love of mine. Our relationship ended in 1989, but our friendship remained strong these 18 years since. I still love to tell about, and laugh about, some of the great memories of life with Fuzzy and his friends, when we "lived life to the brim". The earth is a sadder place now without him, but his light will live on in our hearts. He has always been in mine. And you know he has them laughing in heaven. Cheers, dear heart.

Fuzzy was very special to me. I played in his golf tournament every yearfor the past14 years and he played in the"Atlanta Skal Club" golf tournament(a world-wide executive travel organization)as a honorary member for 12 years straight. We shared many ... oooohh so many ... of the same vices. And we shared some friends.

I can think of a few who deserve more to be gone but none who used their time here more sensibly, if doing what pleases you makes sense. I can't say it doesn't to me.

Fuzzy had a really good time, mostly.

Fuzzy was a customer of mine when I worked at a bank in Executive Park. He was such a kind man. When a woman at the bank was 'arrested' for an American Cancer Society fundraiser, she called Fuzzy and told him she was in jail and asked for help bailing her out. He really thought she was in jail and did not ask any questions, but was totally ready to bail her out. That was just the kind of man he was.

I have know Fuzzy and his family basically most all of my life. His mother and my mother were friends before both of us were born.
Growing up in Belvedere together and through Avondale High School. He and his place became an Atlanta Icon for the best "hole in the wall" hangout in town, with great food, a cast of characters and the best local music. He even credited our friend Doug Peters and myself as the "fist live act" to play fuzzy's....well sorta!
He will be missed by everyone who loved to frequent Fuzzy's Place" and by anyone who just came by occasionally. He was always there to greet a guest or take harrasment from the "regulars"-all with a smile and a laugh.
You will certainly be missed by many my freind...I am sure your hospitable ways will be enjoyed by all at Heavan's gate

Charlotte and I will miss Fuzzy a lot, even though we were mere acquaintances. He was always gracious and friendly, whether you were dining with him or ran into him at a Georgia game. I was always impressed that he seemed so curious about people, wanting to get beneath the surface to find out more about them. A great guy. At least he didn't have to endure another loss to Florida.

The death notice expressed our sentiments. He was a great guy who ran a wonderful establishment.

Fuzzy always had a smile and a hug when I went in for lunch. He remembered names of people who hadn't been there for a year. Yes, he was the ultimate "people person."
Rest in peace!

Fuzzy will be sorrowly missed! He was one of the friendliest people I have ever met. He really knew how to enjoy life.
