Jerry Etheridge Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

JERRY HALLER ETHERIDGE Jerry Haller Etheridge, Professor Emeritus of Music, passed away on Friday, November 30, 2007 at the age of 79 from complications of a bloodstream infection known as Septicemia. Dr. Etheridge taught piano and theory courses for ten years at Georgia College at Milledgeville after which he taught music history courses at the Georgia State University School of Music for twenty-five years including two years as Interim Director of the School. His collegiate degrees were earned at Rice University, a BM and MM in piano performance from the Eastman School of Music, and a Ph.D. in Musicology from Indiana University. Dr. Etheridge was a distinguished educator who set high standards in his music history courses that challenged his students to excel and a mentor-leader of his music colleagues. He also was a part-time music critic for the Atlanta Journal Constitution from 1965-69. In his early career he was a pianist performing solo and chamber music repertoire; that experience resulted in a life-long love for piano literature and recitals. He is survived by his devoted wife, Betty Turner Boone-Etheridge (retired Associate Professor of Voice at Georgia State); a brother, Dr. Richard Etheridge of San Diego; two daughters, Anne Etheridge and Karen Etheridge Smith; and Betty's children, Mary Scheuerman, Bonnie Mullins, and James Boone; six grandchildren, Sara and Gabriel Smith; Scot and Dustin Scheuerman; Rusty Mullins and Wendy Mullins Beasley; and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to: Florence Kopleff Recital Hall Renovation Project, Georgia State Foundation, P.O. Box 3963, Atlanta, GA 30302-3963. A memorial service will be held at St. Martins in the Fields Episcopal Church, 3110 Ashford-Dunwoody Rd., NE, Atlanta, GA on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Medford-Peden Funeral Home, Marietta 770-427-8447

Dr. Etheridge was an outstanding and caring educator. I was privileged to have him as a music professor. I’ll always be appreciative of his sage advice that serves me still to this day. My deepest condolences to his family.

News of Jerry's death came as quite a shock. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.
I'll always cherish the help Jerry provided when I retired and started searching for a log cabin. He kindly showed me through his prized "get away" location and put me in touch with people who eventually supplied plans and materials for a log cabin that owes its design to Jerry. I thoroughly enjoy living in my cabin, and I shall always remember a smiling and affable colleague who gave all the help that he could.
Please take some comfort from knowing that there is a multitude of persons whose lives were touched by Jerry's thoughtfulness, and I proudly acknowledge being one of them.
