Jerry Fuchs Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

FUCHS, Jerry GERARD THOMAS "JERRY" FUCHS Gerard Thomas "Jerry" Fuchs, 34, of Brooklyn, NY passed away at 3:33am Sunday, November 8th at Bellevue Hospital Center in New York, NY as a result of injuries sustained in a tragic accident earlier that morning in Brooklyn, NY. Jerry Fuchs was born December 30th, 1974 in Pittsburgh, PA, to proud parents Gerard and Joyce, currently of Marietta, GA. He was raised in Marietta, GA with his older sister Erica and younger brother Adam and younger sister Gretchen. He was a 1993 graduate of Walton High School. An incredibly gifted drummer, Jerry left the University of Georgia in 1995 to move to New York to pursue a career in music. In 1999 he returned to the University of Georgia, finishing a degree in graphic design in 2002. He moved back to New York that year and found success as a freelance designer and also as an in-house designer and illustrator for Scholastic, the children's publishing and media company. Also during this era, his musical career flourished. Becoming an in-demand drummer, he toured the world playing shows with artists and bands such as !!!, Maserati, LCD Soundsystem, and The Juan Maclean. He had recently made network television appearances on Late Show with David Letterman performing with MSTRKRFT and John Legend, and Late Night with Conan O'Brien show with Moby. A week before his death, he had finished a 7 week long tour of the US and Canada with Athens, GA-based Maserati. In the next few months alone, he was scheduled to perform in France, New Zealand, Australia and the United States. The music community in Brooklyn is reeling from the loss, as testified to by the attendance of 700 at a memorial party last weekend. Jerry Fuchs is survived by his parents, Gerard and Joyce of Marietta, GA. He is also survived by an older sister, Erica Lear, and her husband Michael Lear, of Wake Forest, NC, a younger sister, Gretchen Fuchs of Smyrna, Georgia, a younger brother, Adam Fuchs, and his wife Alyson Fuchs, of Decatur, Georgia. He was a loving uncle to nieces Kira Lear and Sadie Fuchs, and his nephew Aidan Lear. Beyond that he is survived by hundreds of friends, thousands of acquaintances and many more than that who were touched by the music he performed. Services will be held at 7:30pm on Tuesday, November 17th, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Marietta, GA. In lieu of flowers, the parents of the deceased suggest donations to a memorial scholarship for percussion students that is being established. See www.jerryfuchs.net for further information.
