Johanna Scannapieco Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

Johanna S. Scannapieco, beloved wife, Mom, and Mama passed away suddenly on September 26, 2006 at the age of 67. Johanna was born in Providence, R.I. on August 7, 1939, the daughter of the late Fred and Anna Scorpio. Johanna's 45 year marriage to her husband and best friend, Gus Scannapieco, was the product of a deep love that is truly unmatched and that serves as an inspiration to all who know them. Johanna was a devoted and loving mother to her daughter, Lynn, her son, John and his wife, Debbie, whom she considered her other daughter. Known as "Mama" by her grandchildren, Gus and Mira, Johanna looked forward to babysitting and playing with them as often as she could. She loved her family so very much and always put them first. Johanna was an avid reader. She loved birds and, along with her husband, created a bird sanctuary in their backyard. Johanna loved playing backgammon with Gus every day for over 22 years. Johanna was also an inspiration and leader of her second family at Saint Thomas, the Apostle Catholic Church. She considered it a blessing to be a part of such a wonderful parish and was a Eucharistic minister and Liturgy Coordinator. She also served on the Pastoral Council, the Environment Ministry and provided meals for the Night Shelter. Johanna touched the lives of so many people. Those of us who knew Johanna were truly blessed. She is an inspiration. Johanna had so many friends, so many, in fact, that it would be impossible to identify them all. Suffice it to say, Johanna loved you all and cherished each day of her friendship with you. We will miss her deeply, but her memory will remain with us forever in our hearts and minds. Her loving family. Mass of Chistian burial will be held Monday 10 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church with Rev. Stephen Alagno officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday 2-6 PM at Davis-Struempf Funeral Home, Austell.

To all of Johanna's family:
I saw the notice of her passing in the Providence paper this morning and it brought a flood of memories from years ago. We were sorority sisters in Sigma Kappa at the Univ.of RI in the early 60's and had many good times there. Then, when we both became teachers, we happened to get jobs in the same school (Norwood Ave. in Cranston) and were in rooms across the hall from each other. She had 4th grade and I had 3rd. We were the new young teachers and actually considered the rebels of our day! I still remember her energy and lively personality, and how well she controlled her class of 35 kids with just a look, a smile or a frown. She was a wonderful teacher and the children loved and respected her. It seems those aspects of Johanna followed her throughout her life and her goodness touched all those who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was well loved and will be greatly missed.

Dearest Gus and Family, After Ronald Regan passed away someone said "all of the big trees in the forest are falling". With the passing of Johanna, I feel as though we lost another huge tree. She was always a true friend and great neighbor to me. I don't have enough room in this space to write all of her wonderful qualities. I know how much she loved the outdoors and her flowers so now each time I see a beautiful sunrise or sunset I will know that Johanna has the best view from heaven. I will truly miss her. With love, Sue Jenniges

Gus & family,
I’m so sorry to hear about Johanna’s sudden passing. She was so sweet and such a great friend and neighbor to Sue & John. I’m so thankful I had a chance to know her and talk to her about her grandchildren. She loved life and family! Just know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Just remember she lives on through her wonderful children and grandchildren. It may be a look or something familiar, but she still lives on through them, so a part of her will always be with you. God Bless you all.
Sincerely,
Vickie & John Dispoto
