Margery Curry Obituary

CURRY, Margery G. Margery "Margie" Griswold Curry, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend passed away peacefully at home on December 9th, 2015 after a brave battle with ALS - Lou Gehrig's disease. She was born August 7th, 1940 in Plainfield, New Jersey to Mona and Don Griswold. When Margie was 8 years old, her father, who worked for American Cyanamid, was transferred to Montreal, Canada. There, she and her brother Don, Jr. developed their love of skiing and skating - especially since they could ski to school! Their family returned to Plainfield 5 years later and were subsequently relocated to Houston, Texas where Margie's father was head of Jefferson Chemical. Margie graduated from The Kinkaid School in Houston in 1958 and attended the Colorado Women's College, University of Arizona and studied French at the University of Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland. While at the University of Arizona, Margie pledged Delta Gamma, an affiliation she enjoyed throughout her life. In Houston, Margie worked for Tenneco Oil Company for several years. While on a blind date, Margie met and fell in love with John Earl Curry. They were married on May 1st, 1965 at Christ Church Cathedral. They began their married life in Houston where Margie was very active with the Junior League of Houston. She especially enjoyed volunteering at the Texas Children's Hospital; the SPCA; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. In 1980, John, who was working for General American Transportation Corporation, was asked to open an office in Atlanta, Georgia. There the family settled and Margie immediately began to make life-long friends. She was active with the Junior League of Atlanta and had so much fun playing tennis at the Atlanta Athletic Club. She joined the fabulous 9 Hole Golf Association and loved her group the Fab 4. Margie also loved her walking group where for over 15 years they would walk and talk while solving all the world's problems! As the Olympics prepared to come to Atlanta in 1996, Margie volunteered for 2 years in the phone room and then worked in protocol at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. Volunteering at the Olympics was one of the highlights of her life. Her book club evolved from the fabulous ladies that worked with her at the Olympics in the phone room. Margie loved being active at her children's schools - the Marist School, Holy Innocents and Woodward Academy, and adored her church, Dunwoody United Methodist. Her Circle there was so special to her. Most recently, Margie was touched and honored as several of her friends and family joined her in the Walk to Defeat ALS. Team "Marching for Margie" was successful in raising over $13,000 to benefit the Georgia Chapter of ALS. Margie was kind and generous and never met a stranger. She had the beautiful gift of making friends easily and always put other people's needs before her own. Margie was truly loved by all who knew her. She was known as "Mimi" to her grandchildren and is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, John Earl Curry; her daughter, Marci Curry Hamilton (and husband Carlos); sons John Scott Curry (and wife Amy) and David Griswold Curry (and wife Jennifer); her seven grandchildren, Madeleine, Grace and Frances Hamilton; Brooks and Peyton Curry; and Woods and Chase Curry; her brother Don Griswold, Jr. (and wife Marianne); and nephews Bob Griswold (and wife Amy) and Chris Griswold (and wife Tristan). A memorial service to celebrate Margie's life will be held on Saturday, December 19th at 1:00pm with a visitation at 12:00pm in the Parlor at Dunwoody United Methodist Church, 1548 Mt. Vernon Rd., Dunwoody, GA 30338. Margie wanted to thank everyone for always being there for her. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to: Emory ALS Center Attn. Katie Dozier 1440 Clifton Rd., #170 Atlanta, GA 30322; The Retina Research Foundation 1977 Butler Blvd. Houston, TX 77030; or Dunwoody United Methodist Church 1548 Mt. Vernon Rd. Dunwoody, GA 30338.
