Matt Kuhn Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

KUHN, Matt Matt Kuhn of Roswell died Good Friday of complications related to Alzheimer's disease. He was 88. Matthew Walter Kuhn was born in Chicago on June 21, 1922 to Matt and Helen (Bebarski) Kuhn. During World War II, Matt was selected for the Army's prestigious ASTP (Army Special Training Program) and assigned to North Georgia College where he met and married Helen Ash. Matt served proudly in the 7th Army, Corps of Engineers, driving a truck and servicing supply lines for the Allied Forces. Following the War, Matt returned to Dahlonega, and later moved to Roswell, where he lived the rest of his life. Preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Lorraine Kuhn Bowling Hall, and Helen, his beloved wife of almost 50 years, Matt is survived by daughters Karen and Virginia, son-in-law Derrell Kicklighter, granddaughters Kellie Kicklighter (Garret Powichroski), Ashlie (Shane) Brooks and great-grandchildren Robert (Sonny) Pettit and Sarah Brooks. Two sisters-in-law survive him: Virginia Ash MacAllister of Smyrna and Louise Ash Riddle of Dahlonega, along with several nieces and nephews. An alumnus of North Georgia College, Matt also studied at Woodrow Wilson College in Chicago and the University at Heidelberg, Germany. He was a history buff, astute political observer, crossword and trivia expert, math whiz and intellectual. Matt was retired from Thomas R. Hopson, Broker, Inc. Active in VFW, Matt served two terms as Commander of William Cobb Post #7583. He was passionate about matters affecting Veterans and Seniors. Matt lived his last years as a resident of Elmcroft Assisted Living in Roswell, where he enjoyed close friendships with the staff, residents and their families. Matt will be missed and remembered there for his humor, generosity and easy-going, gentlemanly manner. He was a believer of the Christian Faith and we trust he is safely home with our Lord. "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." Matt considered himself a rich, lucky and blessed man. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 26, at 4 PM at Northside Chapel Funeral Directors, 12050 Crabapple Rd., Roswell. Visitation will be held April 25 from 6 to 8 PM. At the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Matt's memory may be honored with gifts of your time, resources and energy toward ending Alzheimer's Disease. Donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association, P.O. KK and family - I only had a chance to meet "Mr. Kuhnster" in person a couple of times but feel like I've known him all my life. He always had a twinkle in his eye, a tremendous sense of humor and an obvious love for his family. May the many wonderful memories you have help to keep him by your side through the years to come and may you find peace in the knowledge he is now whole and in heaven with your mom for ever more. With much love –

Thank you for sharing Matt with me. He was so kind, gentle and compassionate. I looked forward to chatting with him every day at Elmcroft. He always called me "pretty lady". Dad and Matt had a special friendship because they could still enjoy conversation with each other and laugh. Matt will be missed by many. I will particularly miss his smile. There can be peace for you in Matt's passing knowing that he was a good and faithful man.

What a dear Gentleman that we had the privilege of knowing. He had a wonderful sense of humor and Matt and Virginia had such a good time at Bingo. God Bless the Kuhn Family.

Matt was truly a gentle giant and he had so much compassion for others. He also had a keen sense of humor and was so intelligent. Some of my best memories of him include him unintentionally impressing everyone by always answering trivia answers correctly. He and another Elm Croft resident, Joe Griffin, answered every Trivial Pursuit question with ease. The other residents would shake their heads in amazement. It was as if no one else was in the room. The two of them competed like contestants on Jeopardy (minus the prizes).
Another memory I hold dear is the memory of Matt and Lowell Bailey sitting in the living room where I would pass through in the morning. The two of them were big buddies. They would sing "The Girl from Ipanema" to me and we would all laugh. I am so fortunate to have known Matt and I certainly did miss him when I left. It helps to know that he had a long, full, enjoyable life where he was able to experience the joy of having a wonderful wife (of whom he lovingly spoke of on several occasions), a comfortable life and daughters that loved him dearly. He was able to experience what many never do. That comforts me.
It also comforts me to know that he, Joe Griffin and Lowell Bailey are together...no doubt, holding their own trivia game show.

He will be dearly missed by many and matched by few.

With sympathy,

I am so sorry to hear of Matt's passing.
The Kuhns and the Kicklighters have been neighbors of ours for nearly 50 years.

Matt Kuhn was indeed, larger than life,
a big guy with a great heart. He had a very unique sense of humor. I rode by their former house on Woodstock Rd. the other day and the memories of them, came to mind. I can still see them sitting in the living room and watching the TV with their adorable dog, George!

They were so thoughtful and kind to me,
when my parents divorced, when I was in my 20's. They invited me to share Christmas with them that year. I was depressed and unsettled and welcomed the chance to be with them and their grand daughter, Kellie, my lifelong friend. Needless to say,I was completely entertained and felt much better, being a part of their holiday.

I can now, imagine that Helen is no longer waiting in heaven, with George at her side. At last, the Master of the House has come home.

My heartfelt condolences to my dear friends and neighbors of many years,

Georgette Haacke

I always wanted to meet both Matt and Mama. I felt I knew them already via the "channeling" of their distinctive voices and personalities through Karen over the 30+ years we have been friends. Perhaps it is just a formality that we never connected between California and Georgia. I can say I didn't need to see the man to know that Matt Kuhn was someone worth knowing, with a good, kind heart and a dear love of his family - he mattered. He and his sweetheart Helen are now together again - watching over their family from above.

KK, you know that I hold you, Gin, Kellie, Ashlie and everyone else in love and prayer.

I sure hated to hear of Matt's passing. I grew up right around the corner from Matt and Helen. Karen and I were like brother and sister when we were kids and have been friends all of our lives.

My condolences to the family. I will see you all at the memorial service. You are in my prayers.

Matt was a WWII Veteran and those guys are all my heroes.
