Mattie Gencie Wansley Shelton

Family-Placed Death Notice

Mrs. Mattie Gencie Wansley Shelton, age 101, of Atlanta passed away Sunday, March 7, 2004. Mrs. Shelton, known to her family as Gencie or "Tat" was the daughter of John Wesley Wansley and Mary Beatrice McCarter Wansley, who resided in Carnesville GA. She graduated from Carnesville, GA High School, June 19, 1918 and from GNIC (now Georgia College), Milledgeville, GA, June 19, 1920. She was principal of Poplar Springs School, Sept. 1920 to June 1921. She taught sixth grade in Carnesville, Sept. 1921 to June 1926. She married Lewis Shelton June, 1926 and moved to Jacksonville, FL. She taught sixth grade in Duval County, FL for 30 years, retiring at age 60. Her husband had a heart attack in 1980 and passed away. Two years later, Mrs. Shelton sold her home and moved to Atlanta to be near her family. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church for 40 years and taught Sunday School in the Junior department. She was a member of Decatur First Baptist Church until her death. Mrs. Shelton loved sports, especially baseball and was a pitcher on her team in high school and college. She sat up until late at night to see a good Braves ballgame and did this until their most recent season ended. She is survived by her son, Dr. Lewis S. Shelton, Jr.; her grandchildren, Barbara Shelton Howard, Cathy Shelton Dunckel, and Jeffrey Shelton; six great- grandchildren; John Cooper, Gencie Howard, Edwin Howard, Melissa Dunckel, Heather Shelton and Caitlin Shelton; one brother, Lamar T. Wansley of Athens, GA; and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held Thursday, March 11th at 1:00 p.m. at the Shelton lot in Franklin Memorial Gardens in Lavonia, GA. Dr. Harold D. Zwald officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 8th at A. S. Turner & Sons and from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 10th at Ginn Funeral Home in Carnesville, GA. A. S. Turner & Sons.
