Family-Placed Death Notice

Meyer Balser, 95, longtime Atlanta business and civic leader died March 5. The funeral will be held at 12 noon, Monday, March 8 at Ahavath Achim Synagogue. Rabbi E. Noach Shapiro will officiate. Internment will follow at Arlington Cemetery. Mr. Balser was born in Atlanta in 1908. He served as chairman of the Red Cross and Community Chest (predecessor to United Way) campaigns; he was twice named Man of the Year of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company where he was a leading agent for over sixty years; recipient of the ADL Abe Goldstein Human Relations award; President of the William Breman Jewish Home; longtime President of the Atlanta Jewish Community Center; President of The Jewish Tower for 25 years and past campaign chairman and recipient of the lifetime achievement award of the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta. He is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Roslyn; sons and daughters-in-law Jack and Pat Balser and Ronald and Barbara Balser of Atlanta; daughter and son-in-law Ellen and Dr. Barry Hyman of Houston, Tx; grandchildren David and Karen Balser, Michael and Lara Balser, Dan and Lisa Balser, Jonathan and Jennifer Balser, Ginger and Wayne Reid , Laura Balser and Laura Hyman, all of Atlanta and Heidi Fischgrund of West Bloomfield Michigan, Jon David and Deborah Friedland of Long Island, New York, Barton Friedland of San Francisco, California and Karen and Alan Schoellkopf of Dallas, Texas as well as fourteen great-grandchildren; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law Irving and Shirley Stone and Edna Brown of Atlanta and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to the Meyer Balser Center for Healthy Living, 3156 Howell Mill Road, NW, Atlanta, GA. 30327. Meyer Balser was an icon,and because of my longtime friendship with his grandson,David, I spent quite a bit of time around him growing up, and I can honestly say, he made a tremendous impact on my life. He will be greatly missed.
