Neil Shulman Obituary

SHULMAN, M.D., Neil

Neil B. Shulman, M.D., passed peacefully on November 6, 2023. He was born March 18, 1945 in Washington, D.C., the son of Israel "Sonnie" and Mary Shulman, and the brother to Lawrence A. Shulman and Stan Shulman.

Neil grew up in Washington, D.C. and attended Coolidge High School. He graduated from George Washington University in 1967 and then moved to Atlanta, GA to study at the Emory University School of Medicine, earning his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1971. He was board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology and continued at Emory as Associate Professor in the School of Medicine until his retirement.

Neil's achievements were prolific and diverse. In his early years, he was co-investigator in NIH cardiovascular clinical research, authoring over 50 scientific papers. Much of his research focused on reducing hypertension in rural as well as inner-city community settings. Because hypertension was so prevalent in the African American population, he published multiple works on this topic. Throughout his lifetime, Neil was committed to advocate for those unable to afford quality healthcare.

Neil authored over 30 books, including novels, consumer health guides, and children's story books. One of his novels, "What?... Dead Again?" became the basis for the 1991 Warner Brothers hit movie "Doc Hollywood," starring Michael J. Fox, for which he was also an Associate Producer.

Neil thoroughly enjoyed touring as a humorous motivational speaker---"The Real Doc Hollywood." And after writing the novel "Second Wind," he developed a "Laughing with Seniors" show for assisted living and nursing home residents. His children's book, "What's in a Doctor's Bag?" led to performances as "Doc Neil the Banana Peel" for pre-school and elementary audiences. Eventually there was a spin-off series on GPB (Georgia Public Broadcasting).

Neil and Dr. Patch Adams (the same Patch Adams portrayed in the 1998 Robin Williams movie) toured a comedy and clowning production titled "Laughter is the Best Medicine." Funds from their performances helped support Dr. Adams's non-profit, the Gesudheit! Institute, whose mission was developed to improve the health of individuals and communities in crisis.

"Your Body's Red Light Warning Signals," a consumer's guide to self-identifying medical ailments, was yet another book Neil authored. Grateful readers credited him with life-saving advice and Emory's School of Medicine incorporated the book into their curriculum.

Creativity and "thinking out of the box" were a hallmark for Neil. He was a founding partner for various creative outreach organizations: the Village Writer's Group at Emory, Heart to Heart bringing children from developing countries to the US for life-saving heart surgery, WorldPlay celebrating children around the world through the toys they make from recycled materials, and the Global Health & Humanitarian Summit at Emory and other nationwide locations.

Neil met his wife, Anna Zoe Haugo, while touring in Canada in 2001, and their son Myles Shulman was born in 2006. Zoe and Myles supported many of Neil's projects, helping with live shows, video productions, and book publishing.

Neil never missed an opportunity to connect with others, even complete strangers. He was always generous with his time, searching for ways he could inspire, cheer or give a helping hand. He will be missed by many friends, fans, close family members and beloved cousins.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, November 9 at Arlington Memorial Park, and may be viewed via Zoom link via Dressler's funeral home - www.jewishfuneralcare.com.

I am Dr. Tyjuanna R. S. LaBennett, and it was my profound privilege to work under Dr. Shulman's mentorship during my master's thesis research at Oak Ridge National Laboratories in 1979. His groundbreaking work in hypertension research resonated deeply with my own passion for understanding and addressing high blood pressure. As part of my thesis committee, alongside Dr. Nathaniel Revis at Oak Ridge and Dr. Cyril L. Moore of Morehouse School of Medicine, Dr. Shulman offered invaluable guidance that shaped not just my research but my entire scientific perspective. His brilliant scientific mind was matched only by his genuine care for both patients and mentees. I carry his lessons and kindness with me to this day. Thank you, and may God bless your legacy in the forever.

On the anniversary of Neil's death, and the eve of a fractious election, it's worth honoring Neil's caring and open-hearted approach to everyone, whether you were a friend, a patient or a complete stranger. While he had strong political views, particularly about public access to health care, he channeled those feelings into action with a style marked by kindness, passion and intense (but good humored) persuasion. I never met anyone who cared so much for others and advocated so tenaciously for those who struggled to be heard.
I worked with Neil on several writing projects and -- as funny as we all know he was -- his focus was always on bringing positive change. He learned that making people laugh got their attention, and that making important people laugh often opened doors to progress and reform. It's easy to remember Neil as the fearlessly goofy stand-up comic doctor, but it's just as important to remember him for the creative way he used his humor to help bring a better, brighter life to so many.

I just published memoirs that were encouraged by Dr Shulman 15 years ago. I called to get his info and send him a copy of the book, only to learn of his passing. What a true pioneer for humanity. I´ll treasure my one year tenure, with Dr Shulman, as Goodwill Ambassador to Emory University´s Global Health & Humanitarian Summit. So sad to hear it but I´m sure he´s in a better place. Rest well my dearest friend

I met Dr. Neil by chance at a restaurant in Decatur. My time with him was very brief but he is someone I will never forget. He was such a kind person and true example for all of us. My deepest condolences to the Shulman family.

I met Neil when he was at Emory in Decatur and had broken his glasses. To keep going, he wrapped tape around the corner of his glasses frame, which at that point was about the size of a soft ball. I was sent in to dilate his eyes and burst out laughing. Later he asked me as one of his friends to go door to door taking blood pressures in the public housing which existed at the time in downtown Atlanta. Neil founded the hypertension clinic at Grady hospital in the store fronts next to the Municipal Market.

Oh, I am so sad to hear you passed away. I never got to thank you for your generous and kind nature you showed my late husband, Andrew. You stood by him and if it weren´t for you, I don´t think he would have received the excellent care and intervention he did. You were generous with your time and I met such wonderful people through you. I so wish we could have done that radio show but given Andrew´s recovery it was not meant to be. You have left behind such a gift, a trail of wisdom and a lifetime of memories.
My condolences to Anna Zoe and Myles and family.

Neil and I have been special friends for the past 51 years and shared memories of the HDFP years, the Action Award ceremony in Washington, DC, the beginnings of the International Hypertension Conference and many other cherished memories. Just before COVID, I was able to schedule a Story Corps interview with Neil at the Atlanta History Center Story Corps site. I am adding a picture that was taken at the interview. Neil, as one candle brings light to another, your life has brought so much love and light to so many people with whom you have shared your life!

Sending love. I knew Neil through his efforts fighting to keep the public dialysis clinic open at Grady hospital. He was so loving and focused on this issue and the people who were impacted by it. His spirit inspired me to fight for what was right. Sending love to all who knew Neil.

Neil and I were both interested in things and programs we did in nursing homes to make the residents happier and have fun. I was a Family Physician and geriatrician and nursing home medical director. Neil had so much imagination, insights, investigations and such an inspiration. His legacy will actively go on and on. :o)

Dear Zoe and Myles,
I am so sad for the loss of Neil. He was an enchanting friend to Charles and myself. His creativity and wit were boundless. He was kind, caring, and entertaining to so many children in need. Neil's numerous books were inspiring, and his talks were clever and meaningful. He enjoyed showmanship in his presentations and relished the spotlight. Many years earlier, Neil and my father had met at a Harvard summer class. And every time I saw Neil he would say, "Let's call your Dad." And we did. To the end, that was much appreciated. Neil touched our hearts. My sincere condolences for you loss. May Neil's memory be for a blessing. Carol Wien

Neil was a great supporter of our author program at the Carter Presidential Library. Not only was he a speaker at our programs (attracting a large crowd whenever he was featured) but also as an attendee. When he was in the audience for another author, he would always ask questions that showed his compassion and desire to help those who are often left behind. I will personally miss his humor, wisdom, compassion and friendship.
