Paul Webb Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

WEBB, Paul, Jr. PAUL WEBB JR. Paul Webb Jr., of Atlanta, passed away April 15, 2012. Paul lived most of his life in Georgia. After graduating from high school in Lavonia, Georgia, he spent two years at and graduated from North Georgia College, which was then essentially a Military College. He then accepted a position with a large manufacturing company as a time and motion study engineer. The day after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, he voluntarily enlisted in the Army and served as Liaison Pilot directing artillery fire during the invasion across Europe with the Third U.S. Army. After serving in the Army for nearly five years, Paul returned to Atlanta where he attended Emory University, graduating with his Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He then attended Harvard Law School, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Law. It was while attending Harvard that Paul and Gwyneth met. Two years later, they were married and moved to Atlanta where Paul had opened his law firm. Together Paul and Gwyneth raised two boys and three girls. One of Paul's hobbies, in addition to gardening and back packing, was flying one of his planes. He and Gwyneth flew all over the United States attending weddings, visiting friends and often on business. It was not until Paul turned 80 that he gave up flying. This was also the year that he retired from his law firm which had merged in 1994 with the firm Holland & Knight, LLP which, several mergers later, included more than 1,000 lawyers representing clients all over the United States and abroad. As a prominent Atlanta attorney, Paul served as a Board member and President of Atlanta Legal Aid Society and member and Chairman of the Disciplinary Board of the State Bar of Georgia. He was a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a former member of the State Committee of the College. Paul was also very active on numerous National boards of the United Methodist Church. He served on the Judicial Council of the church which is the highest position for a layman in the church. He was also a long time member and past President of the Robert Burns Club of Atlanta. When not in Atlanta you could find Paul and Gwyneth at their home on St. Simon's Island or at their cabin in the mountains of North Georgia near Helen with their extended family. Paul is survived by his wife, Gwyneth; their two sons: Paul Webb III and John Philip Webb; three daughters: Molly Swan, Laurie Webb Daniel, and Susan Gregg; 12 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1pm on Monday, April 23 at St. James United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Arthur J. Moore Methodist Museum and Library at Epworth by the Sea, 100 Arthur J. Moore Dr., St. Simons Island, Ga. 31522; or Loudsville United Methodist Church, 1493 Hwy 75 Alt., Cleveland, Ga. 30528. Online condolences may be made at hmpattersonspringhill.com.

Dear Mrs Webb, I only got to be around Paul when we were doing some painting for him while Ronnie Fain was do some construction work. He was a true Southern Gentleman and I could tell that he was the type person that I could listen to for hours. He shared some of his early stories about his practice that I found absolutly fabulous. I only wish I could have know him better. God blessed us all by letting us know him. Bobby Adams

Dear Gwyn,
Paul and I were friends and colleagues across decades; we shared many interests both inside and outside our profession. We were both veterans of World War II, lawyers, Fellows in the American College of Trial Lawyers, presidents of Atlanta Legal Society, lovers of outdoor environments and hiking, active in our respective churches at local and higher levels, and more. But above all, we were friends, and our friendship crossed generations. I knew well Paul's father and some of Paul's children; thus I have shared professional and personal friendship with three generations of the Webb family. My life has been enriched by the treasured relationship.
I join you and Paul's family in mourning the loss of this good man and citizen, but also rejoicing in the span of time we have shared together.

A prayer: Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on the ripened grain. I am the gentle Autumn's rain. When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry:I am not there, I did not die. May you all find comfort knowing Mr. Webb is at peace. Laura McQueen

Dear Ms. Webb and family,
I have so many fond memories as a child sitting near Mom and Dad listening to Mr. Webb spin stories in his gentle way. He always had time for the Marchman boys when he and Dad got together...I imagine that both of them are having a great reunion right now...shouting about them Dawgs, or perhaps, catching up about their "children". Your are all in my thoughts and prayers.- Frank Marchman- Sharpsburg.

Dear Gwyn and family: I know I speak for everyone in our men's discussion group when I say that our small world has shrunken measurably with Paul's passing. We will miss his keen mind, fascinating stories and ascerbic wit. He loomed large among us, as he did in the wider world. We will miss him sorely. Please call on us if there is anything we can do.
Much love,
