Philip Lutzenkirchen Obituary

Most people probably knew Philip Lutzenkirchen for football: as the starting tight end for the 2010 Auburn national championship team, or the all-time leader for touchdown catches by an Auburn tight end.
But most people didn't really know Philip Lutzenkirchen. "Sports were his release from the world," his sister Ann said. "Sports were his passion. But I don't think it's what defines him."
Instead, it was what he did for others. Like the11-year-old Atlanta girl diagnosed with bone cancer Lutzenkirchen visited in the hospital to lift her spirits, and befriended.
"I found out he did so many things for people that we never knew about," Ann said. "Now we're getting calls from everyone saying he did so many things for them. He never bragged about that type of stuff."
Philip Lutzenkirchen, of Marietta, died June 29 in a car accident. He was 23. Read the news obituary

One who cares...

June 29, 2015

To Philip's family- continued offers and prayers of sympathy to each of you. It's hard to believe it's already been a year since hearing the horrible news, but look at how much has been accomplished by you, in his memory! If you have saved just ONE person by your valiant efforts, then I suppose this was one of God's purposes in calling Philip to Heaven as early as He did. Earth's loss was certainly Heaven's gain. I hope each day brings you a little more comfort - the hurt never ends, just becomes "different" as you manage to take it "one day at a time".
And, not that it matters in the whole scheme of things, but as a fellow AU fan, after the games, I too would be outside the gates waiting for the team to come out after a game, and it was fulfilling to see your family as you proudly waited for him to join you. You were truly a loving, close-knit family! So very proud of your son, and deservingly so! God bless each of you.

Michael, Mary & Family. Never feel alone. I am where you are. I lost my son on June 29, 2007 in a traffic accident just past midnight. He was a civil engineer with his whole life ahead of him. He was a graduate of The Citadel and was employed by the SCDOT. We never expect to be the one getting the phone call that changes our world forever. My heart goes out to all of you as I know what you are going through.

Mike and Mary, so sorry to hear of Philip. He seemed to be such a very accomplished, caring, and unselfish young man. I have watched his career
blosom at Auburn, and undoubtedly his impact on the many people he touched.
May the support of the many people across this country comfort you and your family. You are in my thoughts and prayers, God Bless you and your family.

It always gave our family great joy to shout your family's last name out loud when Philip would catch a pass or score a touchdown. Your child and brother deeply touched the lives of many, many people you will never know--and who will continue to pray for you all. What a wonderful legacy. God's speed.

Given the tributes of these last days, there is little left to say about this remarkable life except that it is truly a reflection of the family, that Meier-Skolak-Lutzenkirchen clan which all of Wheaton claims as its own. The former principal of Wheaton Central can only add that the proud Tiger mascot of WCHS, just like his Auburn brother, grieves the loss, but celebrates the life.

Lutzie was my favorite football player of all time and he always will be. I've been an Auburn fan my whole life but he quickly became my favorite part of it. When I met him, it was by chance. Except not by God's chance. I almost didn't say anything when I realized it was him, but he said something to me. I had been wanting to meet him for 4 years and I finally had, and I have pictures to remind me of that day. The day I met my hero. He said he wanted to be remembered for what he did off the field, and he was. That was better than any touchdown or one-handed catch. I love you Lutzie. I'll see you again soon.

With deepest sympathy:
I am so sorry for the loss of your son, brother, and friend. Lutz was my absolute favorite football player at Auburn! I remember going to Auburn and being at the Tiger Walk. He was the one player I became so excited to see! I had to high five him. Even though he didn't know me I felt like he did. As an Auburn fan I have loved Lutz as a player. Through this tragedy, I have learned to admire and love him as a person. What a Christian role model. He touched so many lives including mine. It is with sad heart this morning that I write this, but with even more of a sad heart that you lost this special young man so soon. I pray for you all to find comfort and peace. God bless and War Eagle!

To the family of Phil.
We are so sorry for the loss of your son. He was a person that my family didn't personally know, but felt like it through the Auburn Tigers. Lutz was and always will be our favorite player. I will never forget screaming his name at the tiger walk and having to get the chance to give him a high five before the games. Through his death I have learned not only was he an amazing athlete, but an amazing christian person as well. I am so sorry your time with him was cut so short. I still can't believe it. Our family is sending prayers up for comfort and healing. Our God is AUsome and remember we can smile because we know he is working.

There are two words that describe Philip to me and my family. "Auburn Man." Always remember he got to walk on the "Loveliest Village on the Plains" now he walks along side God knowing that " The Plains" are a much better place because of the Legacy he has left for others to follow. War Eagle!

I have been praying the rosary, and will continue, to pray for all those impacted by his death....I am confident we will all soon understand & find comfort in his tweet, " I know Gods working, so I smile"

I didn't know Philip personally. I'm just one of the many Auburn family members who is mourning his sudden death. I am so proud of him for what he accomplished on the field as a member of the Auburn football team, but I am most heartened by all the accounts of his character and integrity I have seen since his passing (and even before) and pray that those accounts bring a smile to your heart. With you, I take comfort in knowing that, if he cannot be here with those who love him, he is with his Lord and Savior. My prayers are with his family and friends.

Mary, Mike and family -

The news of Philip's tragic passing was terribly shocking to our family. As you know, Alyse became very close to Philip through their time at Auburn. She looked up to him way before then. When he would come to the girls soccer games and give his support and be part of the fun, Alyse was always saying "and Philip was there". Philip mentored Alyse on the strength it took to be a respected Auburn student athlete. He taught her to resist peer pressure and manage her life through God. We consider Philip's guidance and Christianity to be the reasons why Alyse is as strong a leader as she is on the pitch and off. With Abby as her touchstone, they helped each other overcome adversity, even while being competitors. Our hope is that this continues.

Philip's legacy is real. We feel his presence all the time. Please be secure in the knowledge that your son came from a family built on a strong foundation of love and reverence for God's hand in all things. Philip is with us forever more. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your lives and his. God rest his soul and your hearts.

Love to all. The Scott Family

To the Lutzenkirchen Family and all of Philip's friends, former teammates and coaches, I am an Alabama fan, but more importantly, a huge sports fan. Your son and brother and teammate exemplified what a complete football player was, to me anyway. He had heart and discipline and integrity, both on and off the football field. Which means he was a great kid too. And for this 56 year old, he was just a kid. Philip exemplified to all of us what a person of faith could do with a platform that God entrusted to us. He will be greatly missed by so many, but I am praising God that his legacy will live on forever! I will be praying for you and will continue to do so during the difficult days and months ahead.

Mike and Mary & family,
Our sincerest condolences for the recent tragic loss of your son, Philip. As parents ourselves, we cannot imagine the pain and emotional grief that you are feeling but we hope it is somewhat comforting to know that you are not in this alone and although the void will never be replaced, he left quite a legacy and impact on Earth of memories to cherish forever in his short 23 years here.
At times like this, it may help to reflect back at Jesus's crosses that he had while he was here on Earth and how he got through it by leaning on others to help him actually carry the cross itself that was given to him, wipe off his tears when he cried and wept, gave him some cloths to wear when he had nothing, etc. and always remember that you also need to rely on others too during this tough time and you aren't carrying this "cross" alone.
Davy has some great memories of Philip sitting in the bleachers while you two played "old man" IBM basketball at Fullers park. Perhaps, he even learned a move or two from you old guys for his own basketball talent at Lassiter!
Not knowing Philip myself, when I have seen several of the interviews of him, I can definitely see Mike's mannerisms and wit and Mary's smile shining through. I am sure he was the perfect combination of both of you. Davy also had the privilege of seeing him when he volunteer work for the Chick Fil A Bowl and did the Auburn hospital visits and Philip remembered those games at Fullers too.
You should both feel proud for your accomplishments of raising Philip into the terrific young man that he was. You were/are great "Midwestern ethic" parents that Davy and I admired even before we had children of our own. We also are trying to instill the same Midwestern work ethic, Catholic values, morals, priorities, and traditions into our three children too that you did with Philip and your girls. And you also helped us to see that having a career and kids "can" be done if you figure out your priorities. I know that neither of you will ever regret all the valuable time that you spent with Philip aspiring to do what he wanted to do - including working hard at school/education, practicing sports, participating in the many other activities, church, religion, friendships, and his recent job and to shaping him into the man that he was.
Please know that we care, are here for you in your pain if you need anything, and are praying for all of you. IBM is about the people and you are part of the special people and families that we were lucky enough to get to know - especially in our tight nit IBM Education division back in 1997-'98.
With our love, sympathy and prayers,

May God bring solace to your hearts in the is most difficult time in your lives. Phillip is a beacon for many wandering souls. There is no doubt you did a wonderful job of raising your son. But the greatest thing you did was to introduce him to Christ. He has carried that torch proudly. The Auburn family and your community were very fortunate to be in the path of Phillip's walk through life.
