Philip Walden Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

WALDEN, Philip, Jr. PHILIP MICHAEL WALDEN, JR. At approximately 8:00 pm on June 7, 2011, Philip Michael Walden, Jr., of Atlanta died in a tragic accident. He was 48 years old. Philip had just finished a competitive squash match, a game he had recently embraced with the same heart and enthusiasm he brought to any endeavor he undertook. Born in Macon, Georgia on November 15, 1962, Philip was raised by his parents, Katherine Kennedy Walden and the late Philip Michael Walden, Sr. both of whom fostered his lifelong love of music, books, antiques and architecture from an early age. His childhood years were unique due to his father's career as founder of Capricorn Records. Growing up, Philip was surrounded by music greats such as his father's close friend and business partner the late Otis Redding, as well as Percy Sledge, Sam and Dave and later the Allman Brothers Band, Wet Willie and the Marshall Tucker Band. Philip maintained a close relationship with Otis' children and widow until his death. Following his graduation from high school at Stratford Academy in Macon where he ran track and played defensive end for the War Eagles, Philip attended the University of Georgia where he pledged Phi Delta Theta fraternity and met his partner for life and wife of twenty-two years, Melissa Burgess Walden, originally of Cherokee, NC. Philip went on to graduate from Mercer University, earning a bachelor degree in English in 1988. In 1992, Philip graduated from the Walter F. George School of Law, magna cum laude, where his honors included service on the Mercer Law Review and the Moot Court Board. Following his graduation from law school, Philip began his career at King & Spalding in Atlanta. He was there for a short time when his ever-persuasive father urged Philip to join him in his efforts to revive Capricorn Records in Nashville. During his time at Capricorn, the company again made an impact on the music industry with artists such as Cake, 311 and Widespread Panic which Philip managed during the early days in Athens, Georgia. Philip's energy and legal expertise were instrumental in the label's success during this era. In late 2000, the Waldens sold the label and Philip returned to private practice with long time colleague and friend, Leon Jones at their firm, Jones & Walden. In 2006, Philip joined the legal team at Turner Broadcasting's Music Group, where he served in a leadership role on Turner's Diversity Task Force. He was also a volunteer with the Street Law Program, helping High School students learn more about the legal profession, and on the Board of the Georgia Lawyers for the Arts, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing legal services to artists and musicians in need. In addition to his vibrant legal career, Philip was an avid runner, having completed more than 20 marathons and inspiring many others to live a more active lifestyle. He relished the opportunity to get out of the city to hike, kayak or camp in the mountains of Western North Carolina. He was a member of the Piedmont Driving Club, where he enjoyed playing squash, catching up with old friends and watching his children swim for the club's summer team. Philip was a devoted husband and a supportive father who loved sharing the great outdoors with his family and friends. Funeral services will be held at Saint Philip's Cathedral on Saturday June 11, 2011 at 2:00 pm with a reception following in Child Hall. The burial service will be private. Philip was preceded in death by his father Philip Michael Walden, grandparents John and Vaunita Breme Kennedy and C.B. and Carolyn McLendon Walden. Philip is survived by his wife Melissa Burgess Walden, their four children Lily (21), Rachel (17), Philip Michael (14) and Jarrett (8) of Atlanta; his mother Katherine Kennedy Walden of Macon, GA; brother Charles Lindley and his wife Amy of Coronado Beach, CA; sister Amantha Walden and her husband Nicholas Weidenfeld of Los Angeles, CA; uncle Alan Walden and his wife Tosha of Bolingbroke, GA; aunt Susie Bennett and her husband Gilbert and aunt Dolores Walden both of Macon, GA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Paideia School, 1509 Ponce de Leon Ave., Atlanta, GA 30307 or to The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, 1516 Peachtree St., N. W., Atlanta, GA 30309. H. M. Patterson and Son Spring Hill Chapel, funeral directors. online condolences may be made at hmpattersonspringhill.com

While I didn't know Phil well, I met him during the Goodman Cup Squash Tournament where we played a match together. I truly enjoyed meeting him and he was a gentleman of the first degree. I know he will be missed by all. May God be with his family during this trying time.

August 28, 2011

I met Phil in 1991. He was in my first group of writing students at Mercer Law School. I admired his intellect and his beautiful writing. Later, I admired the love of life, his children, his wife, his family and his musical family that he shared on Facebook. I was so sad to learn he was no longer among us, only a few minutes ago.

Peace to all who intensely love him and shared in his life. May his spirit give you the strength and beauty that he had in this life.

I had the pleasure of meeting Phil while coaching Michael at AYSA soccer...I am very sad to hear about his passing.

June 24, 2011

Our thoughts and prayers to all our Walden cousins. We would not have heard this sad news if our dear cousin, Honey (Katherine Wansley) Bush had not heard of the tragedy and called us. We have not seen "Little Phillip" since he would come to the McLendon family gatherings with his doting grandmother, Carolyn McLendon Walden. It is such a shame that so much time can pass and families miss so much. We are so thankful to hear that he did not let this happen in his immediate household. Just wish we had know this giant of a cousin, the man he became. Oh how my parents loved his Dad.

Melissa, I'm sorry I'm so late offering my condolences. I've been on the road and frankly stunned and so saddened about Philip's accident. I'll miss him greatly and always considered him a wonderful person. We shared a lot from the Capricorn days till the present and I admired him so much for his courage and love of family. Just know that Lenore and I are sending our love to you and all the kids.

As adults, first reconnected with Philip Jr, at the First Christian Church on East Ponce de Leon in Decatur, a little over four years ago, not long after Phil's death. We had a surprisingly cool conversation for me at that time, discussing Hilton Head Island Master Portrait Artist Joe Bowler and Joe's wife Marilyn, and how much they meant to Big Phil is his prime, and to me back then.

Ever since, we often shared spiritual experience, strength, and hope at various churches and clubhouses. We also shared special admiration and respect for Georgia Musical Artists Tinsley Ellis & Randall Bramblett, who we would always catch-up on when they were not around.

Philip was not just an extremely intelligent individual with just the right thing to say, he was also a compassionate and careful listener. Philip made a positive difference in so many people's worlds. I am glad to have been able to celebrate his life in a small way and wish Peace & Love to his Family & Friends!

Walden Family, I send you my heartfelt sympathy. I did not know Phillip personally but have known his Mother, Kathy since we began Junior HIgh School in Macon, Ga. June 12, 2011

My name is John Lipman. I'm friends with Martha Henson. I never knew Philip, but I am saddened by his passing. He was obviously an amazing man, full of love, blessed with friends and family. He and his father's devotion to music is something very dear to me, especially Capricorn records - a label which served as an icon of my childhood and my love of music. I can never know him the way so many of you did, but I can nevertheless feel his loss - and ours. Peace be with you all.

Philip was one of those people that, when you met him, you felt like you'd known him all of your life. I wish I had...but the time we spent together in the past few years will always be in my memory and I will miss him greatly. I know his family meant the world to him...Melissa and kids, all the love he left you will be there to hold on to forever. Philip is like a a great song that will live on in our hearts...he was the son of southern rock..with a soul as sweet as an Otis Redding melody. I feel blessed to have known him.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the entire Walden Family. Wonderful memories of Philip run through my mind to include time in Cherokee and on Martha's Vineyard. Philip's energy and attitude motivated me to adopt a more active lifestyle years ago and I'm sure he was unaware of his enormous influence. I am thankful for the time we spent together. I take time now to remember all the greatness of Philip and reflect on the contributions Philip made to all of us.

Our love goes out to all of Philip's family and friends.

I remember Philip from Mrs. Duffy's Kindergarten when we were 4 years old, what a fun and great guy he has always been. We were friends all the way through Stratford, highschool football team, fraternities, and to the University of Georgia. I am sorry that I lost touch with him since those memorable times. However, my parents in Macon kept me up to date on his numerous accomplishments in the entertainment industry and legal profession. Also, I have learned what a wonderful family, wife, and children he had. Interestingly, both of our oldest children are girls named Lily. He was truly blessed and I feel that we all were blessed to have known Philip. My wife, Allison, my children, and I send our deepest sympathy and condolences to the Walden family. You will all be in our prayers.

Dear Walden Family,

I can't even wrap my mind around the fact that Philip is gone. I work at Turner in a different department, but have been blessed to work with Philip for years. He was my music business mentor! And I don't care how many times I asked him the same question, he answered it. I used to tell him I know I'm a pain for asking again, but he'd say, "That's what I'm here for."

In October of last year, I took him to lunch and interviewed him for a writing project I'm working on. Hearing his many stories, I told him that I should be doing my story about him instead. He laughed with that big grin we all know. "I'm not that interesting," he said. But to all of us who got to know him - he was.

This past Monday, I saw him in the cafeteria. Hard to believe that would be the last time I would chat with him.

Walden Kids - My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Five months ago, I lost my mother to cancer. I pray that God continues to comfort you all as you work through each day without him. Continue to think of all the good memories you had with him. They will bring you through your toughest days. And wrap your arms around your Mom for you will feel stronger as a team.

Philip - I will truly miss you PW!!!!!!!! I learned so much from you!!!! And like we talked about on Monday, I'll be getting some co-workers together to run one morning before work. You said you would be joining us, and I believe on that day you will. For on that day, we will run in your memory!

May God comfort you all today and the days to come.

Susan and I cannot begin to tell you how sorry we are about this. Phil was one of the most thoughtful, caring, interesting and inspiring people I knew. His passion for squash was infectuous and I loved talking with him about the icons of Southern rock that he grew up around that were so much a part of my own teenage years. But, despite Phil's myriad interests and passions, it was clearly family that meant the most to him. I can't imagine the feeling of loss you must feel now, but I know it eventually will turn into a constant warm and reassuring presence as he watches over his family from heaven. So, so sorry.

My heart is broken. The news of the loss of Philip, which my mother passed on to me immediately, is such a shock and so sad.

Philip and I grew up together. We attended the same church. Our parents were friends. He was a fixture of my childhood and among my earliest memories. He was a sweet soul. My heart and prayers go to his wife and children, whom I've never met. To Katherine, his mother, I am so sorry. I am thinking of you and am with you in thought and prayer at this most difficult time. I know it must be so incredibly hard. I am so sorry.
