To the family and friends of Phung--
My deepest condolences go out to you all. While serving as the senior intelligence officer with the US Army Corps of Engineers, I had the opportunity to work with Phung--he helped us catch the men responsible for the murder of one of our civilian employees...he taught classes to our unit...and he was the most excellent of Texas hold'em poker players around. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time--

I met Phung in Afghanistan, where we both lived at the Qalaa House compound. I enjoyed working out at the gym, playing cards and having many meals and long conversations with him. He was always upbeat and funny and told great stories about his life and his work. He was a good man who died way too soon. His death has had a big impact on the many people who knew him here in Kabul. My thoughts and prayers are for his wife and kids, of whom he spoke so highly and had great pride.
