Richard Fagan Obituary

FAGAN, Richard T.

Richard T. Fagan, 81, passed away surrounded by family on October 15, 2023, in Hiawassee, Georgia. Rich lived the American Dream. The oldest of five siblings from Queens, NY, he graduated from Brooklyn Tech, in 1960. He attended Purdue University on a Navy ROTC scholarship, graduating in 1964. Rich loved flying. He flew the P-3 for the Navy during the Vietnam War, earning an Air Medal and reaching the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After the Navy, Rich moved to Atlanta and flew for Eastern Airlines. While flying, he graduated law school and built a real estate law practice. Rich practiced law in Atlanta for four decades. He also gave back via Catholic Charities Crisis Pregnancy Program and the Children's Friendship Project for Northern Ireland. Rich retired to Lake Chatuge where he enjoyed books, sports, sudoku, and boat rides with grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Pam; sons, Patrick (Caroline), and Colin (Gretchen); and four grandchildren. Rich's funeral is October 26, 10:30 AM, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, followed by a lunch reception at Ansley Golf Club. Burial will occur later at Georgia National Cemetery. Bill & I were so sorry to hear about Rich. He always had a great smile for everyone and was quite the gentleman. I always enjoyed flying with him at Eastern and he was the ultimate professional in handling our real estate closings. Our prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time.

Rich, it has been an honor and a privilege to have known you and Pam for the last 49+ years. I remember our first meeting at John Marshall Law School in early 1974 where we discovered that we were both airline pilots branching out to get a Law Degree. We carpooled our way through Law School and then graduated in less than 2 and a half years. At the same time you were flying a full schedule for Eastern Airlines and I was doing the same for Delta Air Lines. Even before we graduated, we found that we were eligible to take the Georgia Bar Exam early.

You said that we might just as well take that Bar Exam as a practice test, I do not think that either of us expected to pass it. What a surprise that we both passed on our first try. We then moved to practicing law part-time and at the same time we both continued flying.

Initially, we joined the firm of Keenan & Calcagno, in Colony Square for a couple of years. Then we moved to your office on Power´s Ferry Road and formed the firm of Welch, Gross, Long and Fagan, where we continued practicing Real Estate Law and flying full-time. In about 1980, you moved to practicing law full-time and flying less. At about the same time, I devoted all my efforts toward Delta and I retired from the Law Practice. It was a great decision for you to concentrate on Law at that time. As we all know, Eastern went out of business in 1989, ending the airline careers of many of our friends.

Those years were some of the best years of my life. Thank you for being my closest friend. May the good Lord bless Pam and your great family at this time.

Captain Howard A. Long, Retired Delta Air Lines.
