Richard SUGARMAN Obituary

SUGARMAN, Richard Dr. Richard A. Sugarman, 66, died peacefully at home on September 2, 2017. An Atlanta native, Richard was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. Often described as "the nicest guy," he used his kind heart, quick wit, and extraordinary memory to bring joy to family, friends, and patients. Richard was warm, fun, and funny, an avid Atlanta sports fan who also loved hiking and travel. Richard graduated from Northside High school in 1968 and the University of Pennsylvania in 1972. He received his dental degree from Emory University School of Dentistry and completed his graduate training in periodontics at Boston University in 1978. He then joined his father and brother in the family dental practice. "Dr Richard" served as an instructor in periodontics at Emory University School of Dentistry from 1978 until it closed in 1982. He served as president of the Georgia Society of Periodontists and served on the Executive Council of the Hinman Dental Society. He was an Honorable Fellow of the Georgia Dental Association, a Fellow in the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He was a member of the Georgia Academy of Dental Practice. He donated his services to the Ben Massell Dental Clinic where he served on the Executive Committee. His patients appreciated his humorous chair-side manner along with his excellent care. Richard is survived by his wife, Helaine; their children: Sarah Sugarman and Brendan Jordan, Rebecca Sugarman and Greg Brazzle, Marla and Ryan Johnson, and Marty Jacobson; and their five grandchildren: Eden, Marshall, Reid, Ben and Blake. He is also survived by his siblings, Edward and Beth Sugarman and Brenda and David Goldberg and his many nieces and nephews. Sign online guestbook at www.edressler.com. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at Temple Sinai, 5645 Dupree Dr. NW, Sandy Springs, GA 30327 followed by a private graveside service; Rabbi Ronald Segal will officiate. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service at Temple Sinai. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ben Massell Dental Clinic, www.benmasselldentalclinic.org, or Weinstein Hospice, www.weinsteinhospice.com. I was thinking of Richard three days ago, so he is definitively part of my history and fond memories of him. He and Jan 's birthdays were on October 14 and 16 sandwiching my wife Eve's on October 15 with mine being on the October 3rd. Meeting while attending Boston for graduate school together we celebrated all of our birthdays on the 15th and became good friends spending time together at meetings throughout the years.
Rest well my friend

I only learned of the passing of this rare individual today. My sincere condolences in the loss of this very bright, cheerful, fun-loving and yet extreme professional, Dr. Richard Sugarman. My husband was his patient from early 80's and I since late 80's. I am shocked and broken hearted in the lost of such a special practitioner and friend. He and his fun demeanor will be sorely missed.

I am so saddened to learn of Dr. Sugarman's passing. I always felt at ease and comfortable with him. I trusted his judgement as a patient and raved about him to family and friends, many of whom became patients. May his soul Rest In Peace.

I knew Richard in high school, and though I left Atlanta many years ago and only saw Richard a handful of times over the years, I'll remember always his wonderful wry sense of humor and one unforgettable moment when I was living in Boston: I was driving up to a toll booth outside of Logan Airport when I threw my quarter and missed the toll basket. I opened my car door, climbed out, and retrieved the quarter. Suddenly, a voice yelled out: "Michael Shoob, get back in your damned car!" It was Richard driving the car behind me. What were the odds of that? I'll never forget that moment, and I'll never forget him. One of the "good guys". Gone way too soon...

Although I left Atlanta several years ago I was a patient of Dr. Richard's for 20 years. We used to joke that we had grown up together. He had a great sense of humor and I always looked forward to seeing him. My condolences to his family who he obviously loved very much.

I was so shocked to hear of Dr. Richard's passing. He was such a wonderfully warm and funny man. He was my dentist for over 20 years and I always looked forward to our visits. It just won't be the same without him. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I was shocked to hear of my friend Richard's sudden death. As a classmate of Richard's in Boston from 1978 my wife Eve and I shared many joint birthdays together as ours were all in early to mid October. Although we lived miles apart we would see each other at annual meetings and developed a very strong friendship. Time would stand still on the occasions we met and now has been sadly marked by the loss of our dear friend Richard.

I am very sorry to hear of Dr. Sugarman's untimely passing. I only saw him as a referral from Dr. Hamp Vason a few years ago, but his kindness and humor really made an impression on me. Despite my lifelong fear of dentists, I almost wished for another problem that needed his expertise. To his family, please accept my sincere sympathy for your loss.

How extraordinary it is to see that so many, including me, actually enjoyed dentist visits. It is extraordinary because of Dr. Richard's uncommon wit and innate ability to put his patients at ease. He shall be sorely missed.

I am very saddened by this. Richard and I went to Margaret Mitchell Elementary School and Northside High together. Many times, groups of friends would gather at Richard's house, where we were always welcome, to hang out. I remember when Richard came to Margaret Mitchell in fourth grade. He won some kind of academic test (spelling? vocabulary?). The teacher wanted him to wear a crown in recognition of his achievement. He would have none of that. I was impressed that he didn't want to flaunt his honor. (He even had character as a 10-year-old.)
