Robert Parham Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

PARHAM, Robert DR. ROBERT FLEMING PARHAM His patients hailed Dr. Robert Parham as a skilled and caring physician. A scrapbook assembled by many of them after he retired movingly attests to those qualities. Dr. Robert Fleming Parham died June 1st, 2008 after a brief bout with bone cancer at 52. These same qualities prevailed in his personal life as well. Whether it was his relationship with his wife, Karen, of 24 years, his family or with his scores of devoted friends, his love, tenderness and generosity were paramount. The third of three boys born to L. Glen and Frances Parham in Atlanta, he was brought up in Atlanta's Garden Hills neighborhood. He was raised in an atmosphere that promoted the love of sports and the outdoors. This served him well as an Eagle Scout and as an athlete during his formative years and continued to serve him in his adult years as a traveler/camper/hiker/skier and as a rabid Georgia Bulldogs fan-a trait he inherited from his father. Robert attended grammar schools in Buckhead and graduated from North Fulton High School in 1974. He went to college at Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College) graduating in 1978 and finished his medical education at the Medical College of Georgia in 1982. After completing his medical training he set up a family practice in Greer, S.C. Around this time he met and married his beloved Karen. During his tenure as a family practitioner he was struck with Wilson's disease, a rare hereditary condition. Forced to give up his practice, he moved back to Atlanta and began the slow process of rehabilitation. By dent of hard work, an unwavering will (he was misdiagnosed initially) and proper medication he made huge leaps toward his eventual recovery. He began work again in the early nineties and has been the medical director at the CCI clinic for the past ten years. Robert traveled the world extensively with Karen and went on countless ski trips with her and with friends. Camping and hiking were second nature to him and the sight of his vehicle filled with gear, firewood and friends (canine and human alike) was common. His lean 6'4" frame and competitive spirit combined to make a formidable and always entertaining figure in many sports, organized or improvised. Pictures of Robert seemingly flying through the air as he jumped from various perches into the Chattahoochee River are scattered throughout his home. He loved the Christmas holidays and spent hours decorating his home and dispensing gifts to family and friends. His warm humor and sagacity, acute analytical skills (especially regarding Dawg's football) and generosity will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He is survived by his wife, Karen, brother Lee and sister-in-law Buff Parham of Highlands, N.C., brother Bruce Parham of Atlanta as well as niece and nephew Allison Pace and Glen Parham. Graveside services will be held and his ashes interred at the Haygood Family Cemetery in Pickens, S.C. on June 22nd. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given to a favorite charity in Dr. Parham's name.

Karen, I did not know you but knew Robert well from MCG class of 1982. He and several of my fraterniuty brothers all hung aound together, Tom "TC" Calk, Jim "Rooter" Green and me "Wild Bill" Walker. Robert was such a warm kind gentle person, I am sure you miss him greatly, but rest assured he IS in Heaven, in a wonderful place without any suffering. GOD bless you, sorry this took so long, My Mother who still lives in Atlanta cut his Obit out and sent it to me, I have had it in my folder, meaning to drop you a note all this time. GOD bless and comfort you, Bill Walker 455 State Road 6 West Tunkhannock PA 18657

Karen,
I can't begin to express how sorry I am at Robert's passing. I will always remember him going for his walks with the dog, first Katie, then Bonnie. I will remember him as one who truly loved everything about the great outdoors-from the North Georgia mountains to the swamps of Florida. I will miss him greatly. Please know you are in mine, Carole, and Alexis' prayers.

Dear Mrs. Parham, I will always remember "Doc". When I remember him I see a wide smiling face, and a "happy-go-lucky", fun-loving person who never treated any one as beneath himself. I remember his deep singing voice as he sat alone signing Drs. orders in the office next door. I still hear and still see him singing and dancing to the "possum song" from the Beverly Hillbillies. I remember his kindness to his patients. He was truly a patient advocate. He is a truly special person and I will always remember him . I pray whenever you think of him Mrs Parham, only joy will be in your soul. God bless you.

Dear Karen, Lee, and Bruce:
I was quite moved by the obituary of Robert (I'll always know him as Robin). He was always a nice guy to me when I was a kid visiting at the Parham house or when he was a junior or senior at high school and I was three years behind him. His ability to recover and prosper despite his health issues was impressive and a beacon to the rest of us. It was good to see Bruce and Lee and your families at my mother's funeral last week. Thanks for coming. Strength to you all in this time of grief.

Dear Parham,
you have been a prominent and esteemed part of my life since the day that I was born. Your love, spirit, and overall spunk has shaped my young life in only the most positive of ways. I will continue to keep you, Karen, and all of your loved ones in my prayers. I love you.

Robert my sly old friend,
I have known you since grade school, and then in high school, then in numerous escapades since, some I remember well and some not so much. When I first heard of your final diagnosis each afternoon from my deck I began to see a peregrine falcon that would fly in lazy circles above our house, free and unencumbered, going wherever the warm drafts would take him. I just knew it was a sign of you and your free spirit! You will always be a part of me and I look forward to see you in the great beyond. Farewell for now my friend and May you always remain in peace.

Your friend,
Buddy

Robert,

I have known you since the second grade. We played football at my house and basketball at yours. Throughout the years, I'm so glad we kept our friendship. I will surely miss you and you will remain in my thoughts for ever.

Karen
I was so sorry to read about your husband. I worked with you in surgery at W. Paces Ferry back in the early 90's. I remember you so well and was so pleased I could write to you. I was Sarah Marion at the time and remember Carol P.and Debbie and a few others. You are in my prayers.

I was sorry to read the passing of your friend Robert. I lost two brothers to Wilson's Disease, one before it had been diagnosed, the other 40 years after it had been diagnosed. It is such a shame it is so often misdiagnosed. I was one of the fortunate, who is doing well taking the medication that has allowed me to live a normal life, so far, for 58 years.
Robert and you will be in my prayers. John

Dear Kid,
You meant more to me for over 35 years than mere words can express. I loved you like a brother and felt the same from you. Meet me in the rhododendron tunnels if possible when the time comes...I'll be looking for you.
