Roy GEIGER Obituary

GEIGER, Jr., Roy S. COL. ROY S. GEIGER, JR. COL. Roy S. Geiger, Jr., United States Army (RET) returned to heaven on January 9th, 2014. He was born in Pensacola, FL on December 26, 1920 and was the son of the late General Roy S. Geiger, USMC and Mrs. Eunice R. Geiger. COL. Geiger graduated from The United States Military Academy, West Point, in 1942 and after a very distinguished military career spanning WWII through the Vietnam War, retired from active duty in June 1972. His impeccable military service in defense of his country was second to none. He is predeceased by his best friend and golfing partner, and wife of 57 years, Mrs. Jacqueline M. "Jackie" Geiger. COL. Geiger is also predeceased by his sister, Mrs. Joyce G. Johnson and brother-in-law COL. Robert J. Johnson, USMC (RET); his brother-in- law and sister-in-law Mr. Walter and Marilyn McLeod. COL. Geiger is survived by his son, Buzz Geiger (Sandy); daughters: Gay Park (David); Heidi Walker (Raymond); Katherine McGowen (Michael); Diane Wahl (Buddy); son, Peter Geiger (Samantha); (17) grandchildren, (6) great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. After his military career, COL. and Mrs. Geiger retired to the Atlanta, GA area, finally calling Duluth, GA, home. Both were very active members at the Berkley Hills Golf and Country Club, with COL. Geiger serving on numerous Club boards throughout his membership and then as president. While COL. Geiger was old school and loved all sports, he was especially fond of golf and never played a golf course that he didn't like. During their retirement, he and Jackie would travel to numerous golf destinations, throughout the USA, to enjoy their shared passion and each other. While his children and grand children and the "entire family" as a whole, remained his center throughout his life, it was during his retirement years that family reunions became an annual event, where he would continually be amazed by the imaginations, creativity, strength and knowledge of his growing family's newest members. During his life, COL. Geiger was not only the consummate warrior and intellect, he was also the exceptional husband, father, grandfather and friend. His understanding of life, loyalty, family and love of country he openly shared, when asked. All who knew COL. Geiger (both family and friends) will deeply miss his genuine kindness, wisdom, wonderful sense of humor and life example of personal courage. While his was called The Greatest Generation, he best exemplified the greatest traits and values of that generation. He understood and believed that "Every day was another day to excel", to learn, to improve, to make our own lives better, and consequently, to put ourselves, our families, our country in a stronger position to overcome the challenges that face us, individually and collectively. A true gentleman, he practiced and believed in personal respect, discipline and individual responsibility. Most missed will be his unconditional love, wise guidance and the paternal example that he provided to all of us, throughout our lives, regardless of the circumstance. Rest peacefully Dad, you've earned it! A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM, Monday, January 13, 2014 in the Chapel of Crowell Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. Father David Dye officiating. Interment will follow at Peachtree Memorial Park with Full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Wounded Warrior Project online or by mail to Wounded Warrior Project, Post Office Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675 in COL. Roy S. Geiger, Jr., United States Army (RET) name. I am very sorry for the loss of a great father and man. I had an opportunity to enjoy his humor and good conversation when he visited Bluffton SC to visit Gay and Dave. God bless you all. Love, Louellen Macolly
