Russell French Obituary

FRENCH, Jr., Russell Reid

Russell Reid French, Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia, a devoted and dependable father and a loyal son, brother, and friend, passed away on June 23, 2025, at the age of 53, surrounded by people who loved him.

Reid was born on August 17, 1971, in Atlanta, Georgia to Russell Reid French, Sr. and Victoria Holmes French. He attended The Lovett School for 14 years, graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude, and valedictorian from Davidson College, and was a Baker Scholar at Harvard Business School.

Reid met the love of his life, Sarah Patterson French, at Davidson College in 1992. They shared a wonderful life together for over 27 years before Sarah's untimely passing in 2022.

Reid had a quick wit, was prepared for any situation, and was always ready with sage advice. He had a remarkable intellect and lifelong curiosity, delving deeply into subjects to gain a true understanding. His first loves were his wife, Sarah and their children, Colin and Virgini. Together, he and Sarah instilled in the children their shared passion for travel, music, and theatre. Reid was awarded the prestigious Watson Fellowship after graduating from Davidson and spent a year in London and Amsterdam, studying the economics of theatre production. His interest in travel continued throughout his life, and he and Sarah particularly enjoyed returning to London over the years. He directed and performed in musical theatre, both at Lovett and Davidson, and was an aficionado when it came to Broadway and West End musical theatre.

After the year in London, Reid worked in Corporate Finance at The Robinson Humprey Company in Atlanta, beginning what would be a truly exceptional career that reflected his abiding interest in economics, markets, and corporate leadership. After three years with Robinson Humphrey, Reid and Sarah moved to Boston where Reid continued his education at Harvard Business School. Following Harvard, he worked in Strategic Planning for the Walt Disney Company in Orlando, helping to develop the Wilderness Lodge and Animal Kingdom theme park. Returning to Atlanta in 2000, he began working as Chief Operating Officer of Novient Inc., before becoming Chief Operating Officer of Intergraph Corporation and then Chief Executive Officer of Applied Systems. Reflecting his true character, Reid formed deep and lasting friendships throughout his career.

Reid was on the board of The Lovett School for nine years and served as Chairman of the Board from 2015-2020, overseeing the search for a new Head of School and facilitating the leadership transition. After Sarah's passing, Reid devoted extensive time, energy, and passion to research and fundraising efforts to cure leukemia. At the time of his death, he was on the board of multiple public companies as well as his alma mater, Davidson College.

Above all, Reid was most proud of his children, Colin and Virginia. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sarah Patterson French. He is survived by his children, Colin McRee French and Virginia Holmes French; his parents, Rusty and Vicki French; his sister, Tracy French McMillan; seven nieces and nephews; and devoted friends.

A memorial service in honor of Reid will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, July 11, at Trinity Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. A reception at the church will follow the service.

When we read about Reid´s death, we were heartbroken. We were both at Davidson with Reid and Sarah, and although we were not close, we had many good friends in common. We add our thoughts and prayers to the many that have already been offered. Otto (`93) and Christy (`95) Sharp

Heartbroken by the news. May he rest in peace.

I´ll always remember the genuine way Reid connected with people and how effortlessly he made every presentation engaging and impactful at Applied Systems. His leadership left a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

P.S. I´ll treasure my photo with him from the "Circle of Excellence" ceremony even more now.

Dear Virginia,
Every little while I peruse Davidson's In Memoriam page, primarily to look at passings of my own classmates, as we are all in our mid-70s. I went on this morning, and I was terribly saddened to read the news of your dad; and it was compounded by the loss of your mom several years ago, which I hadn't realized. I know that I saw both of them at least once while you were here. I am so terribly sorry to learn of both, and I know that you and your brother are processing a profound loss that should not have come so soon. I loved both of your parents and I was always grateful for all of what they gave to Davidson and to music. You father was never without a smile on his face, one of the truly nicest people I ever had the privilege to know. All of my thoughts and prayers will be with you. I know that time will give you an ability you don't have now to process, and that the pain of this great and sudden loss will be replaced by warm memories. But you will always miss him. Even in your loss, I know that you are grateful to have been HIS daughter. I'll never forget how much joy it gave me when you told me that you were Reid and Sarah's daughter. You have my deepest condolances.

My husband Peter Kintz and I met and raised our kids in Atlanta, and knew of The French family. It turned out that The Frenches were dear friends of both Linn and Mary Towles Allison, who both attended Davidson College. I am so sorry for the loss of a very fine and very dear young
man.

With Love, Mitzi Brown Kintz

Reid was truly an extraordinary leader. I learned so much from him in the years I worked with him at Applied; smart as a whip, humble, insightful, great business savvy and truly just a good guy. The world is at a loss without him. Rest in peace Reid.

So sorry to hear this news. What genuinely nice guy. It's been years since I've seen him (the Lovett days), but will always remember his kindness.
Condolences to his family, especially his children. Rest easy my friend.

Reid was the smartest, most humble person I have ever met and a genuine awesome human being. We spent many years in the trenches together and always had each others back. We shared our birthday and I loved him like a brother that I never had. Reid may you rest in peace in Heaven reunited with Sarah and others who have proceeded you. I pray the Lord comforts and consoles the French family, especially Colin, Virginia, Tracy, Rusty and Vicki. My sincerest condolences to all the family and friends.
