Rusty was a true gentleman who was liked by everyone he came across. He was always dedicated to working tirelessly for his district. He never let his handicap hold him back at all even though I know it was a struggle at times. RIP my friend.

My sincere condolences to the Kidd family. Rusty had a great sense of humor and was always a gentleman to me and other Senate staff I worked with. He always asked about my son when he saw me. May he rest in peace.

Rusty was a good man with a big heart who never met a stranger. A talented multi-sport athlete, he and I were in Coach Doug Dickey's first football recruiting class at The University of Tennessee in 1965. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. My sincere condolences to his family-Brantley

I worked at the Medical Association of Georgia with Rusty and never saw a day that he wasn't friendly, helpful and agreeable. He never seemed to care what prominence, class, or wealth you had--he was friendly and helpful to everyone. I loved his vigor for life, his constant friendliness, the smile he put on your face, and his constant generosity. I was no one special, but he treated me as if I was the most important person who saw that day. I haven't seen Rusty in a long time, but am I exceptionally sad at his death, because he was a one in a million person, who everyone seemed to love.

Sorry to hear about this. He was a good man and a good friend. We first met about 1980 when I was lobbying for the MS Medical Assn. Reconnected years later after his accident when we both worked for RJR. My prayers are with the family.

Rusty was a born leader. From Baylor School in Chattanooga, where I first met him, I realized he was going to be out front of the pack. I remember trying to outrun him and out play him. He was always in the lead. The nation and his teammates will miss Rusty . The memory of his overcoming the difficulties of life will be in our minds. May he rest in peace. His race has finished. He won.

I remember Rusty more as a motorcycle riding mover and shaker behind the scenes man than as a legislator. He would come to the Cap roaring up on his cycle dressed in a black leather jacket and boots. I was devastated when he had his accident and heartbroken when he came back to the Cap in a wheelchair. Culver was a old time Georgia pol and Rusty took his place. Played in many golf and other outings with RK and he was always fun to be around. I was kind of learning my way around the Capitol when we first met. Rusty did it much better than me. I made everybody mad and had to dig out a lot. Rusty just worked the crowd and pretty much achieved his goals. What stories he could tell. Last of a kind.

Rusty and I met 50+ years ago when we were Freshmen in college. I knew then that he was meant to be a politician with his charisma and commanding presence, not to mention his family history. He lived up to that and so much more. He was so down to earth and unassuming and a credit to Baldwin County and the State of Georgia. He never let being in a wheelchair stop him from anything. I have such respect and admiration for what he accomplished. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

The last independent? I might add the last of two rascals who knew how to get things done, were fiercely loyal to their districts and had enough of a sense of humor for stunts such as having a sign marking the Culver Kidd Highway placed very strategically. Your service is greatly appreciated.
