Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Samuel W. Large Jr. US Marine Lance Corporal.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Thank you so much for the kind words and allowing my sister to have comfort in knowing that Sam was in good spirits that day. It means a lot to know that there are people like you and Sam out there to serve and protect us. And some gave all for us. Thank you so much for taking general care of my nephew and treating him like your own. I will forever be grateful to you for that ' so will my sister. Thank you Jeff.

Sam was a great guy, father, husband, and friend. Many of my freshman year memories include Sam and the VRHS Band. We lost a great friend, the day he was taken from us. I'm glad that the world still has a small piece of him, in his son. God bless you, Sam. Gone but NEVER forgotten!

April 3, 2013

Thank you Jeff for that beautiful note and for showing our beloved Little Sam the care and respect he deserved. I am Sam's cousin and I didn't get to see him as much as we all should see our family, but he and his family stand out. Sam was straight up a great kid and young man. He was a bit of a prankster who had an unusually caring and protective relationship with his little sister. He was smart, funny, loving and chose to use his capacities serving in the military. His family misses him and loves him and always will.
Thanks again

To the family and friends of Lance Corporal Samuel Large:

For 7 years I have mourned your loss in silence. I did not know LCpl Large save for this: we stood next to each other in the lunch line on his last day, neither of us knowing he had but three hours left or that in 23 hours I would lift him aboard a Navy helicopter and render him and the others honors as they began the long journey home. A week later, when I was ordered off the wreck site, I rode back to Djibouti in one of the two remaining CH53's belonging to HMA464. As I departed the aircraft and cleared the rotors I looked over at the fuselage and immediately noticed the name of the crew chief, "LCpl Large". I nodded to the other officer with me on that unfortunate mission and then to the helicopter. He nodded his acknowledgement and we again saluted in silence as we cleared the tarmac.

If it is of any comfort to you, Samuel was in good spirits in his final hours and we treated him with the utmost care and respect the following day. I have children who are Samuel's age and I treated him as if he was one of my own, because he was.

Our brief encounter has forever changed my life. I often think of Samuel. And whenever I hear people talk about "kids these days" I set them straight. I have served with the next genearation, I have seen them in action, and I have stood next to "kids" who have demonstrated a degree of charicter seldom depicted in the youths portrayed in the movies or seen in those hanging out in the malls. I have stood next to the very best our country has to offer and I have seen the price they have paid.

While this war came to all of the older men and women who fought it, it was men and women like Samuel who came not just to the aid of their country, but to the aid of their countrymen when we needed them most; and for that I, and my generation, are forever in your debt.

May God keep well until you are reunited with Samuel.

Sincerely yours,

Mary Sovie

It is so hard to believe we are at our 6th anniversary of the most painful day of our lives. Time hasn't eased the pain, I think we've just had to adjust to living with it. Our loved ones will always be treasures of our heart, but losing them was like losing a piece of our self. Yet, we must go on and carry them with us wherever we go and celebrate their life along the way. They will never be forgotten!

Please know your family and friends remain in our prayers and we will never forget Sam's sacrifice. Sam & Nic will always be watching over us!

God Bless! Mary

Large.. my brother.. wow, five years... it definitely doesn't seem like it has been that long. The other day I was trying to remember exactly how long and it just didn't seem right. Eventhough we miss y'all we know that you are in good hands. God always has a plan for us and I know that you are doing good for someone, as you always did. Brother, words can't seem to express the feelings for the loss that we feel, but we have to believe that this a time of remembering our friends and the fun that we had. That fun will again be had one day in the future. Semper Fidelis.

Here we are at the 5th anniversary; an anniversary that none of us wanted to have. As our hearts continue to ache for our loved ones, we all have had to find our way through the grief and learn how to deal with the loss in our own way. For my family, it is our faith in God and knowing that He is in control and nothing surprises Him, that helps us through each day. The support of family, friends, community and the prayers of people we may never meet keeps us going. And through it all, we continue to celebrate Nic's life and he remains a part of our lives each and every day. My family continues to pray for you & your families and be assured we will never forget the sacrifice Sam made. God Bless!

Large,

I finally downloaded the cartoon you recommended the night before your flight. It wasn't that good; but I'm sure you already knew that.

Everyone back on base had someone that they wanted to see come back. That night, you and Sovie were the ones I wanted to see back at the tent. But no matter how long I stared at the door, you guys never came.

I still held out hope the next day, on the recovery flight. There just had to be someone. You were the first one we brought on board. There was a lot of growing up that had to happen really fast that day, for a lot of people.

I use the mishap nowadays to teach the new crew chiefs the importance of Crew Resourse Management and that they are the ones who can keep things like this from happening again. With your help, I'm making it happen. I'm sure that with your constant inspiration we'll be able to influence our little part of the world.

You started calling her my wife even before we left for HOA. Well, now she actually is my wife. Melody and I both miss you and look forward hanging out again.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

We miss you so, so much. I wanted to wish you a Happy First Fathers Day. I knew you were standing there giggling. I love you son. Love mom

June 10, 2006

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

If the eyes are truly a window to ones Soul... this picture shows one of the most beautiful of spirits. What a precious Smile as well! Although my words can't replace you, my family of 7 is forever grateful to you for your service and protecting this country that we live in. Thank you for having the "courage" to fight for this country and fight for freedom, and to also strive for better things in your life. What an example you were while on this earth! I pray your family will have God's peace one day after the shock of losing you is still not so fresh. You are what makes American's proud! My family does not forget this verse either..." To the family of Samuel Large,

I was very sorry to hear about Sam's death. We met in boot camp at Parris Island. We were in the same platoon. He was a very nice man and I was happy to be apart of his life. I would like to send my deepest regrets on this terrible incident. The Lord be with you.

Dear Large Family,

Words cannot describe how sorry I am for your loss. I had the distinct honor to have Sam work for me here in Africa. I have known him since he was in Crew Chief School where I was an instructor at the time. I was able to see him excel everyday in his job from the very beginning. He was a truly special person and all of us are better off for knowing and working with him. I pray that God will comfort you in your grief and that you know he will be truly missed here among his friends. You will always be in my toughts and prayers.

I am sending my condolences to Whitney and Tyler and Sam's parents & siblings and to all of his friends. My heart aches for them as my heart aches for the loss of my son. Sam & Nic were best buddies and the thought of them gone is heart wrenching. I have never personally met the families, but feel I know them from conversations with Nic. We have some great pictures of Sam & Nic. I have a new friend in Whitney and plan on staying in touch with her....Sam & Nic would have wanted that for us. Just remember that we have "Marine Angels" looking out for us. They are always with us....love never dies. They are heroes who gave up everything for our freedom...they will never be forgotten. I love you all and I am praying for you too. God Bless! Mary

I had physics with Sam when I was in 12th grade and Sam was in the 11th. I remember him being voted as the "Prince" (junior version of king) at my senior prom. He was a nice guy and I am very sorry for your loss. You all are in my prayers.

I attended the Funeral for Samuel Large, Jr. today. It was an honor to meet Mr. Large, Sr. Our paths crossed because my son served with his son in Djibouti in the same shop. It was very emotional for me. I can only imagine the emotions his family is feeling. I am always available if I could be of any help to the family. I can say that the emotions for Sam Jr. is felt over the entire world. It is very hard for the Marines that are left behind. They are making a tribute patch for their fallen heroes. In addition, they are contemplating getting tatoos to honor them. I feel like the Large family are now a member of my family and I know they are a member on my son's family. God Bless the Large family and all the others who lost loved ones on this terrible day.

I am so sorry for your loss. My son served with Samuel in Africa and at New River. On behalf of my son and I, please know that Sam gave his life for the noblest of duties, defending our great nation. May you find some measure of comfort by that thought. Again, my son and I send our deepest sympathies.

I just returned from my Uncle's memorial service today and saw that Samuel had given his life for the ideals and belief that he was helping to make the world a better place for his family and my own. My Uncle Howard "Kin" Kinney was a hero himself who served in three wars dating back to WWII. I know that he and Samuel are together in our Savior's arms.
