Scotty Clarke Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

CLARKE, Scotty SCOTTY "WHITEY" CLARKE Scotty "Whitey" Clarke died peacefully at his home in Naples, Florida on November 22 at the age of 50. Father, husband, brother, son, uncle, musician, and friend to hundreds, the "Pope of Buckhead" leaves behind an indelible mark in the history of Atlanta's former premiere entertainment district. Scotty's story began at Dirty Al's and Friday's in Sandy Springs and included stints at Carlos McGee's, Vickery's in Midtown, and the Steamhouse Lounge where he turned a friendly little oyster roast into the must-do event of the year in the Buckhead community. Every February for 25 years, literally thousands came to the hood, to enjoy good food, drink, music, and good company. When Scotty wasn't planning Oysterfest, he was playing Santa Claus at Christmas, building a float for the St. Patrick's Day parade, renting the Roxy Theatre for a 1988 Presidential debate between a dog and a local bartender or simply giving a friend a helping hand. Need Stones' tickets, cab fare, help or a friend? Want a beer or Jager? Ask Scotty. Need directions? Don't ask Scotty. Scotty brightened the day for everyone in his path. When he wasn't on the clock, he could be found from lunchtime and beyond at Aunt Charley's, Peachtree Café, Otto's, Mike'n'Angelo's or numerous other historic watering holes; all long gone, but part of the history that made Buckhead THE place to be. And the memories go on, and Scotty Clarke will be remembered as an integral contributor to Buckhead's legacy for decades more to come. A memorial service for Scotty will be held on Thursday, December 4 from 4-7pm at the new Steamhouse Lounge, 1051 West Peachtree Street (corner of 11th & West Peachtree). Scotty is survived by his daughter Lauren and her mother Redina, his mother Irene Clarke, brothers Bill, Mark, and Eric Clarke, and a multitude of friends whose lives he made just a little bit better. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in the name of Scotty Clarke to the Georgia Academy for the Blind STUDENT FUND, 2895 Vineville Avenue, Macon, GA 31204.

When my story of old Buckhead is done, Scotty will be one of the characters. He was a friend and one of the cool guys for a small town boy new to the city. I will miss running into him at M an As or Music midtown. He is a part of our past that we should celebrate for him and our- selves. He was a good man.
