Stanley Dunnington Obituary

DUNNINGTON, Stanley "Stan" Lewis

Stanley Lewis Dunnington died at Winship Cancer Institute in Atlanta of aggressive lung cancer on November 2, 2025. Stan was born in Elmhurst, Illinois on August 15, 1952. After graduating from Blackburn College in Illinois, he moved to Atlanta in 1974, where he worked as an orderly at Grady Hospital. He went on to work at the Georgia State Equal Employment Opportunity Office and then in 1983, he became a flight attendant for Piedmont Airways which was acquired by U.S. Air which was taken over by American Airlines. He was still flying two months before he died.

The only positive aspect of losing Stan is that his passing has brought together so many of the people who knew and loved him. His family, with the assistance of Stan's close friend Gary Glass, was able to take care of him in shifts 24/7 for two and a half months even after he was admitted to the hospital and he died surrounded by those who loved him.

So many of the people Stan flew with over the years have made a point of reaching out to share how much fun it was to work with him.

Humor was fundamental to who Stan was, regardless of the situation he was in, but his fun was not the har-har, slap-you-on-the-back variety. It was dry and arch and observant. He has a text on his bathroom wall that says, "Tact is for people who aren't witty enough to be sarcastic."

Well Stan was often tactful but plenty witty enough for sarcasm and so, so funny.

He has left an unfillable hole in the lives of his sisters, Diane Hill and Barb Kreski; brother, Steve Dunnington; and too many nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, co-workers and friends to list.

Stan was preceded in death by his mother, Jane Dunnington (née Baldwin) in 1983; his brother, Tim in 2008; and his father, Tom Dunnington in 2013.

A celebration of Stan's life is planned for the spring but the time and venue have not been determined.

Earlier today

Our dear, dear friend. Everywhere we look in our house and on our property we see Stan´s hand prints. He was so thoughtful, generous, and a relentless task-master - especially when it came to painting the fences!! Whether it was work boots or red pumps, nobody styled it better. We are staring at his work boots now, knowing that no one else can fill them. He is always with us. Cathy and Nancy

Stan was a nice gentleman which I had the pleasure of knowing through our work trips. I pray that his family feels the comfort of his loss from so many who loved and cared for him. May God hold him in the palm of his hands always.

Stan was always so delightful to work with. I don't think I ever heard a negative word out of his mouth. His dry sense of humor was one of his many gifts. So happy to have shared time with you, so hard to know no more.

It was always a joy to fly with Stan. Many times I had to leave the cart in the aisle because I was laughing so hard. Alway's a twinkle in his eye. You are missed!

There´s no one like Stan...that sense of humor will be so missed. And if we had the pleasure of working with both Stan´s, we loved the "Stanwich". We´ll miss you Stan

The eyebrows. Stan would look at me and raise one or both eyebrows about something or somebody and I always knew exactly what he was saying without him saying a word. I would be dying laughing and cracking up and he would have a totally straight face. He was a classy gentleman and one of my favorite coworkers of all time. He was a hard worker and always did his job to perfection. I´ll never forget him.

Stan, one of our dearest flight attendant friends, is a treasure. We ask ourselves often, "What would Stan say?" and the answer is always something dry, witty, and smart. We're heartbroken, yet our love for him remains. With Christian sympathy,

Stan opened his beautiful home and heart to me more times than I can count - for fun moments like catching the kisses my kids blew him and thumping them on his heart - and for thoughtful conversations about life´s Big topics. I´ll miss him tremendously. Xoxo, Katie
