Victor Cavanaugh Obituary

CAVANAUGH, Victor

Victor Alwin Cavanaugh "Vic", age 83, of Atlanta, GA, died at his home on March 21, 2025. Born in Syracuse, NY to Virginia and Victor Cavanaugh, Vic attended Centre College of Kentucky where he graduated in 1964 with a major in Political Science. He was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Delta Theta fraternities. While at Centre he met his future wife, Barbara. Upon graduating, Vic was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy and was assigned to a ship home ported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii making several cruises to Vietnam. During this assignment he and Barbara were married.

Upon his discharge from the Navy, Vic attended Duke University School of Law graduating in 1970 with a J.D. degree. He and Barbara, with their newborn son, then settled in Atlanta. Vic was first a partner with Swift, Currie, McGhee, and Hiers and then a partner with Elarbee, Thompson, Sapp, and Wilson, practicing in the field of labor relations. Vic was a member of the Atlanta, Georgia, Florida, and American Bar Associations, the Lawyers' Club of Atlanta and the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers.

Vic most enjoyed being with his children and grandchildren, running, playing golf, watching Duke basketball, and spending time at Lake Burton. He was a long and faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, being active in the Haiti Mission work and the F.P.C. Women's Shelter. He was also on the Board of Directors for Childspring International.

Vic is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara; children, Victor (Sylvia) and Tom (Jennifer); grandchildren, Victor Juan, Tommy and Claire; brother, Jack (Anne); nephew, Jonathan; nieces, Mary Harkins (Patrick), and Martha White (Mike).

In Vic's memory, please consider giving to the La Gonâve Haiti Partnership to support the health, education, and well being of the people of Nouvelle Cité, La Gonâve Island, Haiti, care of First Presbyterian Church.

A celebration of Vic's life will take place on Sunday, April 6, 2 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 1328 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta. Available parking options include: 5th floor of the Midtown Plaza Parking Garage, 1360 Peachtree St. NE. Proceed to the open door connecting the lot to the church campus. Lanier Parking deck across from the church, 1337 Peachtree St. NE. Church security will validate these parking lot tickets. There are also limited spaces in the lot behind the church on Art Center Way and some handicapped spaces along 16th Street.
