Vida Andersen Obituary

ANDERSEN (Jacob), Vida

Vida Jacob Andersen passed away peacefully from natural causes on August 20, 2025.

Vida was born on January 23, 1935, in Yorktown, Texas, to Caesar and Edna Jacob. She graduated from Yorktown High School, and she earned a B.S. in Medical Technology from Texas Lutheran University. She later earned a M.A. in Political Science from the University of Memphis.

Vida raised three sons - Keith, Bruce, and Todd. She gave unselfishly of herself to her husband, her sons and their wives and her grandchildren. She enriched their lives with her love.

As a friend recently said of Vida, she was a lovely lady. She was intelligent, kind-hearted, gracious and a friend to everyone. She will be missed.

Vida was an enthusiastic and skilled gardener throughout her life. In recent years her favorite place to be was in the resident gardens or in the memory garden at Lanier Village Estates. She loved reading and enjoyed travel across the US and internationally.

Initially a registered medical technologist, she later became active in the League of Women Voters, serving one term as President of the Memphis-Shelby County chapter. She served in the VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) program doing oral histories of the Douglas community, a historic, all black neighborhood of Memphis. She worked in MIFA (Metropolitan Interfaith Association) in a variety of capacities. She ended her career as Executive Director of the Memphis Area Neighborhood Watch Program. She was highly regarded by her colleagues and quietly effective in each of these positions.

Vida is survived by her husband, Richard Andersen; children, Keith Andersen (Susan), Bruce Andersen (Cindy), and Todd Andersen (Debbie); grandchildren, Meredith Andersen-Elliott (David), Jessica Campos (Xavier), Matt Andersen, Thomas Andersen and Elizabeth Andersen; great-grandchildren, Leonora and Wren Andersen-Elliott, and Avery Campos; nephews, Nolan (Kara) and Phil (Cathy) Sagebiel; and grandniece, Carly Sagebiel.

In accordance with her wishes, there will not be a memorial service. There may be a reception at a later date.
