Walter Herndon Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

HERNDON, Walter WALTER R. HERNDON Walter R. Herndon, 81, Stone Mountain GA, passed away June 25. Born in Birmingham AL, he served in the U.S. Navy before completing a Ph.D. degree at Vanderbilt University. Starting as professor and head of the botany department of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 1961, he served in college and university administrative roles until 1984, when he resumed teaching in the botany department until 1994. In his research, he identified algae and other microscopic organisms. His work intensified his reverence for life in all forms. He continued botanizing in retirement, gardening and identifying microscopic life in Stone Mountain and the southeast. His overriding concern was others' well being, allowing him to relate to everyone. With his ability to make things work in organizations, this enabled him to help people develop their potential-in the classroom, in academic and professional organizations and in personal relationships. He will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife Faye Borthick, children Martha Herndon, Martin TN, Stephen (Beth) Herndon, Jupiter FL, and Susan Herndon and Thomas (Lora) Herndon, Knoxville TN, and siblings Buford Herndon and Eleanor Herndon, Birmingham AL. Friends will be received 5-7 pm July 4, St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church, St. Mountain, with a memorial service 11 am July 5 at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged in memory of Walter, payable to the University of Tennessee, for the Walter R. Herndon Botanical Garden Endowment or the H. R. DeSelm Botany and Plant Ecology Endowment (mail to Development Office, College of Arts and Sciences, 2524 Dunford Hall, University of Tennessee, Knoxville TN 37996-4000.)
