William MERIWETHER Obituary

MERIWETHER, William WILLIAM F. (BILL) MERIWETHER Dr. William F. (Bill) Meriwether, of Atlanta, GA, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2014. He was born on March 2, 1929 to the late Francis T. and Wilhelmina Meriwether in Sanford, Florida. Bill attended the University of Georgia, where he met and married his wife of 64 years, Peggy Hensley Meriwether. After graduating with a B.S. in Agricultural Science and a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine, Bill entered the Army, where he served his country with distinction in the Veterinary Corps throughout the United States and in Japan, completing his service as a Major in the Army Reserves. He returned to Florida in 1963, joining a veterinary practice in Fort Lauderdale where he worked until his retirement. Bill was skilled at treating a variety of pets, including monkeys and exotic birds, and also bred Basenjis, a breed of dog that he particularly admired. And, much to the delight of his children, many pets who were abandoned at the clinic found a home with his family instead of transfer to a shelter. Bill excelled at every pursuit he undertook, earning the rank of Eagle Scout, winning championships in bowling, and patenting and marketing inventions that improved the practice of veterinary medicine. He was a talented amateur photographer, painter, woodworker and leather crafter. Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Lois Sloan, and two of his children, Jean Jamison and Deborah O'Neill. He and Peggy moved to Atlanta in 2010 to be near their daughter, Patricia Killingsworth, and her family. Bill is survived by his beloved wife Peggy, daughter Patricia, son-in-law Scott Killingsworth, and granddaughters Elizabeth and Catherine Killingsworth; his sister Carol Woodall; his nephew Frank Sloan; and his nieces Kathy Neitzke and Ellen Purcell. His life will be celebrated in a private family service. SouthCare Cremation & Funeral Society, 770-420-5557
