Emily Carley (Director, Witness to War Foundation)
January 3, 2023
I had the incredible honor of interviewing Mr. Richardson for the Witness to War Foundation. His stories of his WWII service were incredible, and I'm humbled that he shared them with me. We're grateful that he allowed us to record his memories, so that they may live on. Our deepest condolences to his wife Betty and the entire Richardson family.

It is with heavy heart I have learned of Uncle Bill going "PCS" (Permanent Change of Station), to be with the LORD. The photo was taken 17th January, 2021 as he helped me straighten the flag poles in front of his home where he has flown the Flag of the USA and US Marine Corps for years. I completely agree that Uncle Bill's undying devotion to his bride Betty of 75 years, is what kept him respectfully waiting to answer the LORD's call home, until that last day he could share with her on the 75th anniversary of their union.
I always find it odd how words have the destructive power to do permanent damage to relationships, but are powerless to offer any true consolation in times of heartbreaking loss. For me, the words of President Lincoln as a master of words, always come to mind, as he struggled to find words to ease the sting of loss in a letter of condolence to a Mrs. Bixby, who had lost five of her precious sons to Civil War battles. In part, he wrote;
"I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. ...I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost..."
Equally weak and fruitless are my words here, but I do pray that our Heavenly Father will work in unexpected ways to comfort you all in your loss. Rest peacefully Uncle Bill, and join your fellow US Marines in guarding the streets of Heaven.
With love and respect,
Dave
