I only just learned about sergeant Robie's passing, in the AJC and I felt the need to comment. At glance it might appear we had nothing in common. I am a 78 year old white male and I wish I had met him because we did have much in common. I am the oldest of 10 children, and while my daddy was not a share cropper and he paid to send all of us to catholic school we did not have much. We had one pair of school shoes per year and by the end of May we had to stuff the holes with cardboard. My daddy was WWII marine veteran of Iwo Jma. I am an Army vet of Viet Nam. I had the most important job in the country. I spent 35 years as a classroom teacher. 28 of those years were in African American schools After my three years of military service I spent four years working for the Atlanta parks and recreation department mostly spent in Bank Head Courts. I began my career in education as a substitute teacher at the bank head elementary school, while you taught college classes. I worked full time for seven years while going to Georgia part time. I also earned some help from the GI bill. I've been retired for many years now but I wish Could go back just to put the AJC article on my board and teach them about the total life of a real American hero. God bless you sir.

A Century of Grace
Rest in peace, soldier brave and true,
A hundred and four years, life gifted to you.
You served with honor, through war and peace,
Witnessed the world´s joys and griefs.
Your legacy shines, your duty done,
Beneath the stars, beyond the sun.
May your soul now soar, your spirit stay,
Guiding us gently along life´s way.
