A tremendously kind soul is still missed. I remember his smile as I sit at the desk answering call lights that was filled with the request coming from patients. His sincerity with staff and his patients was genuine. Years ago I remember attending one of my nephew's graduation and Dr Water's was the Guest Speaker. His words spoken left heartfelt encouragement with so much hope for the graduates future endeavors

What a wonderful teacher he was. One of the fondest memories I have of Dr. Waters is his skiing to Piedmont during a rare Atlanta snowfall. He was rounding on our unit one day and one of his patients had a GI problem. Dr. Waters ordered a spec be sent to the lab. He advised us the correct spelling was guaiac!

I'm so blessed I got to work with Dr Water's for several years. I could just sit and listen to him tell his stories. Funny I was just praising him to a co-worker just the other day.

Sarah Ann, we've thought of you and your family so much since we heard about Bill's death. Many treasured memories of a friendship going back to KA days at Emory, your wedding, and later times when Bill was our doctor. He was a wonderful Renaissance Man! Sending love and prayers for your comfort in this time of loss ...

Dr. Waters was our family internist from 1972 until his retirement at Piedmont. He had a way of making each patient feel as if they were his most special patient. Dr. W. was a gifted diagnostician and he always had a way of helping the patient look on the optimistic side of a proposed diagnostic test....."you are well until proven otherwise and if a problem arises, we will work it out". He set the gold standard for a physician rather high.

In "retirement", Dr. Waters was active at the MSCA, where he continued to provide his care and counsel to those in need of his skills. I knew him on the Board there and regret only that our acquaintence was all too brief.

There was never a time that I saw Dr. Waters in the halls and wards of Piedmont Hospital that he didn't have a smile or a kind and pleasant word to say. He will be missed. Rest in peace, Dr. Waters.

I was saddened to learn of Dr. Water's death. My interaction with him was limited to a few patient referrals, exposure to some of his writings and a few personal encounters. He was a man of unusual ability and temperament and I have the impression that his life and career were in the tradition of Sir William Osler.

It would be hard to count the number of lives that he has impacted. His legacy will live on in the patients that he treated and the doctors that he trained. When I was a medical student in Atlanta he was recognized as a model physician and teacher. He will be missed.

To Sally and all the Waters family,
I am so saddened to learn of your father's death. Just one year ago, my own beloved father died. Your father lived such a good life, made a difference in others' lives, and left a remarkable legacy. Please know I am keeping you all in my prayers.

Mrs. Waters, after having a week of loosing a loved one in death myself, I had to share with you what got me through.
Ish 41:10. which says "Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not gaze about, for I am your God. I will fortify you. I will really help you. I will really keep fast hold of you with my right hand of righteousness.’
Hopefully you are fortified as I was.

Dear Family, Bill, Charlie Harrison(my internist),Frank Wilson and several others put me back together after I was run over by a car and clearly, without those talents, I would not have survived. With gratitude, I will think of him often. A great physician with a servant attitude.

I hope that these words pouring in of support, love, memories, laughter, respect for Bill - and inspiration from Bill - will warm your hearts some during this difficult time. When things are hard, read these words and entries again and look at all the people Bill touched in his life! He truly was an amazing man.

Dear Mrs. Waters and family, What a pioneer Dr. Waters was. I worked with him in the 60s at Emory and even then, his mind was working on advances in the care of our first renal transplant patients. I too took care of our first few with him. He was a fine, giving man. Aloma Sibley

Dr. Waters was my mother's physician in 1970 at Piedmont. Marion Harwell had Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Dr. Waters termed her recovery "a miracle." She is still with us in her 96th year, thanks to Dr. Waters. May God bless his family in this time of loss, as Heaven is made even better with his arrival.

Dr. Waters' remarks upon receiving "The Emory Medal" in 1996 established a gold standard of gracious acceptance speeches. After a very few, under his breath thanks, he looked toward the audience and stated emphatically "Standing here to receive this award I feel just like a turtle on a fence post --- you can bet I did not get here by myself. Thank you very much!" And that, only that, is precisely all he said! We all should follow his example.
We will miss his graciousness and be thankful for all of the 'turtles' he helped onto fenceposts!
