Calvin Hoegh Obituary

Calvin Lee Hoegh, 85, of Elk Horn, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2018, at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn.
Calvin was born June 30, 1932, in Audubon County, to Edward and Christina (Jorgensen) Hoegh. He grew up in the Brayton area and attended Elk Horn Community High School.
On Sept. 2, 1951, Calvin married Phyllis Petersen at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Atlantic. After they married, they lived in Atlantic and Calvin worked for Weddum's Hatchery in Elk Horn and at Culligan Soft Water in Atlantic. In 1953, he joined the US Army. During his service time, he was stationed in California and Alaska. After his discharge in 1955, Calvin farmed south of Elk Horn.
He then became a salesman for Walnut Grove Feed in Treynor. Calvin was a very successful salesman with Walnut Grove for 25 years and often he was one of the top salesmen. He and Phyllis started Four Corners Travel in Treynor and he was a big help with trips. Calvin was also an activity bus driver for Treynor and Elk Horn Community Schools. Calvin loved sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. He very rarely missed any of the Elk Horn or Treynor games over the years. After retiring, Calvin and Phyllis moved to Elk Horn.
Calvin was a member of the Treynor American Legion Post 725 and the Elk Horn American Legion Post 322 for 61 years. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Treynor, where he was on the church council and also served in several other offices at the church. While living in Treynor, he was active in all activities. He received the 4-H backer of the year in Pottawattamie County and they also received the 4-H Family of the Year Award. While in Elk Horn, Calvin served on the Salem Lutheran Home Board and on the Danish Windmill Board.
He always had an interest in people and he enjoyed visiting with anyone and everyone. On the travel bus trips, he enjoyed singing, playing games, telling jokes, visiting and playing cards of all kinds. He always enjoyed singing with the grandkids and the great-grandkids. During his stay at Salem Lutheran Home, he loved the singing at worship time and anytime in the halls. Calvin would always end his trips by leading the singing of "God Bless America."
