Debra Rae Bergman

Debra Rae (Thompson) Bergman, 67, longtime resident of Mason City, passed away Wednesday March 4, 2026 at MercyOne Hospital in Mason City. Debra was welcomed into this world by her beloved parents Raymond and Phyllis Thompson in Des Moines, on July 31, 1958.
She grew up in Atlantic, where she took note of her parents' servant approach to life and started a life-long dedication to helping children with an array of different needs and abilities. Deb graduated from Atlantic High School in 1976. After a life of raising children and working as a para professional for Mason City School District with children in special education, she went back to school and graduated from Buena Vista University with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. She utilized her college education to further serve children with mental and behavioral difficulties and honor her commitment to supporting others with mental health and substance use challenges.
When Deb was not caring for children, whether they be her own or others in need of love and support, she could be found honoring her whimsical self with paint splattered and creative hands, propagating plants, taking in and nursing stray animals, and always ready to put on a pot of coffee to laugh with friends.
Deb is survived by her son Andy (Mindy) Olson, daughters Amber (Russ) Sampson, Alisha (Chad) Seger, and Monica Bergman; 12 grandchildren Lydia (Brad) Nosbisch, Luke Olson, Tina Olson, Ruth Olson, Evelyn Olson, Tobias Olson, Skyler Redies, River Redies, Canyon Redies, Oakley Redies, Jack Sampson, Raelea Seger; and one new beloved great-grandson.
Deb was preceded in death by her sleeping daughter, Danielle Marie, and parents Raymond and Phyllis (Wildman) Thompson.
A celebration of life will be held at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel on March 28 in Mason City. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. with the celebration of life at 11 a.m. and luncheon to follow after the service. The burial will be held in the spring at the Corwith Cemetery in Corwith, among the blooming trees, songbirds, and flowers. Just as Deb would want it.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Hillcrest Family Services in Cedar Rapids, in honor of their historical work supporting young women in a vulnerable time.
