Jerome Peters, 86, of Marne, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2024, at his home and surrounded by family.
The son of G. Bruce and A. Gwendolyn (Trailor) Peters, Jerome Delbert was born June 28, 1938, in Rural Lewis. He rode his horse to Rural Brighton #9 school, attended Atlantic High School and graduated with the class of 1956. He was a Teletype Operator at Fort Benning, Ga. during his time of service in the U.S. Army.
Jerome was a devoted and faithful husband to Dorothy (Schmitt) Peters for almost 54 years. Their union was deeply blessed by two children, Bruce and Cynthia. In 1968, Jerome leased and managed the Marne Co-Op Station, was later a foreman at American Buildings and raised purebred black Angus cattle. He was also a trophy winner at building and drag racing cars. Of all his accomplishments, he most highly valued that of cherished husband and treasured father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
In his spare time, Jerome enjoyed meeting up with friends for coffee, often at Nelson's. His hands were seldom still and he loved tinkering in the shop - most recently on a 1926 Model T. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, but no professional sporting event ever topped attending grandchildrens' activities including: 4-H, sporting events, plays, vocal and orchestra concerts. In his somewhat younger days, he enjoyed team roping and participating in and watching rodeos.
The family enjoyed many incredible events and vacations, including anniversary trips to the Bahamas, National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, and the American Rodeo. As far as Jerome was concerned, he was just as happy trail riding and camping with friends and family.
His heart for service was full to overflowing and he put in many hours with the Marne Fire Department as a volunteer for years; he was a member of the Methodist Church and was Trustee of Marne Methodist Church; member of Western Iowa Cattlemen's Association and Iowa Team Ropers' Association.
His sense of humor is more than memorable and he was a captivating storyteller. Jerome's pranks were ornery but always good natured!
Surviving Jerome are his wife (Dorothy); children, Bruce (Marie) Peters and Cynthia (Dustin) Jensen; grandchildren, Samantha (Dusty) Hague, Garrett Collier, Morgan Haggard, Tyrel (Kyra) Peters, Kyler Jacobs, Jolene (Jonathan) Yoder, Mateya (Taylor) Baca, Gaige (Lexi) Gourley, Elly Peters and Kadie Horwedel; great-grandchildren, Kendall, Sloan and Weston Hague and Grayson Gourley; and many other extended family and beloved friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, G. Bruce and A. Gwendolyn (Trailer) Peters; his sister and brother-in-law, Loretta and Bill Baker; brother, Daniel Peters; in-laws, Glenn and Mabel Schmitt.
