Ann Boorinakis Obituary
Ann Judith Boorinakis
 9/5/1922 - 2/18/2007

Ann was born on September 5, 1922, in Akron, Ohio, the fourth of five children of Halarambo and Calliope Poulos. She passed away at home on February 18, 2007 after a lengthy illness.
She spent her early years in Akron, where her father was one of the many Greek immigrants who worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber. She attended the Akron schools and later, Ohio State University, where she majored in Food Science and Nutrition.
After her marriage in 1949 to Philip Boorinakis, she moved to his lifelong home in Auburn, Calif., where they operated the family pear and plum ranch. When their two children entered school, Ann became very active in the Parent- Teacher Association, holding several offices, serving on many committees, and being awarded an Honorary Life Membership, as well as forging many long-lasting friendships.
Her association with the schools continued when she was later employed by the Auburn Union School District, where she worked until her retirement. She was also an active member of the California School Employees Association.
Since her arrival in California in 1949, she traveled regularly to Sacramento to attend services at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. In an effort to preserve the culture of her ancestral home of Crete, she was a Charter Member of the Zeus Cretagenis Fraternal Organization, where she served terms as President and Secretary, and also worked on cultural and educational projects. Her association with this organization led to the realization of a lifelong dream when, in 2000, she attended a Pan Cretan Conference on the isle of Crete and was able to visit Livanania, the mountain village of her mother.
After her retirement, Ann volunteered with the Placer County Literacy Program, the Auburn Education Foundation, and gave Greek cooking demonstrations for local groups, as well as teaching Greek Cuisine at the Placer Adult School. She was a life member of the Friends of the Auburn Library and an avid reader and lifetime learner. She and her husband were also members of the Mother Lode Model T Club of Auburn.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Philip; her daughter, Phyllis Boorinakis and her husband, Thomas Harper; her son, John and his wife, Leona; and her grandchildren, Julia Boorinakis Harper and Zachary and Nicholas Boorinakis. She is also survived by her brother, Andrew Poulos and his wife, Helen of Tucson, Arizona; sister-in-law Sophie Paulos of Austin, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
In accordance with her wishes, a private graveside service was held. Remembrances may be made to The Friends of the Auburn Library, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, or the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Sacramento.
